A process for demetallizing metals contaminated FCC catalyst in an FCC regenerator. A metals getter additive, with higher settling velocity, is added to the regenerator, to remove metals from FCC catalyst by solid-solid interaction. The FCC catalyst forms a light, discrete, dense phase fluidized bed on top of a fluidized bed of additive. FCC catalyst is recycled to the cracking reactor from the top fluidized bed, while additive can be withdrawn from the lower fluidized bed for disposal or for metals recovery and recycle. Additive can be optimized for metals removal and will not dilute the cracking catalyst in the FCC reactor.

A continuous process for converting lower aliphatic alkanol and light olefinic hydrocarbon feedstock rich in tertiary olefins, such as isobutylene and other C.sub.4 isomeric hydrocarbons, to alkyl tertiary-alkyl ethers and C.sub.5 + gasoline boiling range hydrocarbons. An improved process and reactor system includes means for: washing the olefinic hydrocarbon feedstock with an aqueous liquid stream in a contactor unit to recover water-soluble impurities therefrom in a washwater stream recovered from the contactor unit; contacting the lower aliphatic alkanol and a washed light olefinic hydrocarbon stream from the contactor unit under iso-olefin etherification conditions in at least one etherification reaction zone containing acid etherification catalyst; separating etherification effluent to recover a light primary effluent stream comprising unreacted alkanol and light olefinic hydrocarbon and a liquid product stream containing alkyl tertiary-butyl ether; contacting at least one effluent stream containing unreacted alkanol and light olefinic hydrocarbon with a substantially fresh water liquid extractant stream to recover unreacted alkanol therein. In a preferred embodiment, at least a portion of the alkanol-containing liquid extract stream is passed to the washing step for treatment of hydrocarbon feedstock.

An ethene stream and a stream containing unreacted methanol and water are recovered from the first reaction zone effluent and the methanol is separated from the water.The ethene and the separated unreacted methanol are contacted with a medium-pore shape selective zeolite catalyst in a second reaction zone at elevated temperature and moderate pressure to convert the methanol feed to hydrocarbons comprising C.sub.3.sup.+ olefins and cooling effluent from the second reaction zone to recover a C.sub.3.sup.+ olefin hydrocarbon stream and a C.sub.2.sup.- light gas stream. The C.sub.3.sup.+ olefin hydrocarbon stream is fed to the first reaction zone with the methanol feed.

A process for synthesizing di-isopropyl ether (DIPE) by etherification of isopropanol. A multi-stage process can employ propene in mixture with other feedstock materials, such as propane from refinery gas, in a primary hydration stage to produce isopropanol. The isopropanol is enriched between stages to remove water. In the second reaction stage the isopropanol is converted catalytically with large pore acidic zeolite to yield DIPE, which can be separated to recover pure propene.

An improved reactor system reacts crude aqueous methanol feedstock with iso-olefinic hydrocarbons to produce C.sub.5.sup.+ methyl t-alkyl ethers. The system includes an extractor for contacting the aqueous methanol feedstock with a liquid hydrocarbon extraction solvent rich in C.sub.4.sup.+ isoalkene. Both an organic extract phase and an aqueous methanol raffinate phase recovered from the extractor and fed to a primary reactor. This primary reactors reacts the methanol and C.sub.4.sup.+ isoalkene from the organic extract phase under catalytic conditions to produce an ether product. The ether product is fed to an etherification effluent fractionator to separate the ether product from unreacted methanol and C.sub.4.sup.+ isoalkene. A secondary reactor then converts methanol from the aqueous methanol raffinate phase with the unreacted methanol and C.sub.4.sup.+ isolakene to produce hydrocarbons.

Preferred primary conversion reactions include dehydrogenation and aromatization of aliphatics.

Aliphatics are aromatized in a two-stage catalytic upgrading process. In the first stage, aliphatic hydrocarbons are at least partially cracked and dehydrogenated to form an intermediate product stream. The extent and selectivity of the cracking and dehydrogenation reactions are preferably controlled to maintain heat balance in a second stage catalytic aromatization step.In a preferred embodiment, a first aliphatic feedstream is cracked and dehydrogenated to form an intermediate product stream. The intermediate product stream is then mixed with a second aliphatic feedstream and contacted with a zeolite aromatization catalyst. Cracking and dehydrogenation of the first aliphatic feedstream is controlled to provide heat balanced aromatization of the combined streams.

Inert particles are used to transfer heat to the reaction zone. The particles may be heated separately from the catalyst in a combustion zone or together with the catalyst in a regenerator. Fuel is fired to heat the inert particles or a mixture of catalyst and inert particles. Hydrogen deficient fuels such as charcoal or coke are preferred.
