摘要: A method and apparatus for recycling marking surfaces such as office paper is described. The system scans a marking surface, determines the location of printing on the marking surface and deposits erasing material directly over the printing. Because the distribution of erasing material is confined to the printed areas, the use of erasing material is minimized. The described system can be easily adapted for use in traditional copying systems to recycle paper.

摘要: A process for enabling the separation of a mixture of DNA fragments comprising (1) providing an electrophoresis devive; (2) adding to the device a solution mixture containing DNA fragments of different lengths; (3) energizing the device, thereby creating a sequence of unidirectional uniform electric field pulses therein, said sequence of field pulses alternating between primary positive voltage pulses and secondary pulses of a negative or a positive polarity with less voltage than the primary pulses; (4) calculating the time duration and the field strength required for the primary and secondary field pulses to enable resolution of the fragments into separate and distinct groups corresponding their lengths; and (5) applying in the device the selected primary and secondary fields with intensities and durations corresponding to the size of fragments to be separated. Another embodiment of the invention comprises a computer program that facilitates a DNA gel electrophoresis process.

摘要: Ophthalmic devices are provided based on an interpenetrating (IPN) double network hydrogel of a first network physically entangled with a second network. The first network is an entangled network of self-linked hydrophilic telechelic macromonomers and hydrophobic moieties. The second network is a hydrophilic network of crosslinked polyacrylic acid. The IPN double network hydrogels including the hydrophobic moieties are characterized by being optically clear and having refractive indices above 1.34.

摘要: A method of using electrokinetics for separating particles in a buffer solution is provided, where a chromatographic column is provided having a non-uniform internal longitudinal cross-section. At least one main inlet for inputting solution and at least one main outlet for outputting solution are provided. At least one sample inlet and at least one sample outlet are provided. The particle is introduced to the column from the sample inlet and fractionated samples are eluted from the sample outlet, where quality control and further analysis are enabled. An electric field is applied to the solution in the column to generate a charged double layer at a solid-liquid interface within the column. The electric filed moves ions within the double layer, and a non-uniform velocity profile is induced to the buffer solution. The moving ions carry the particles along the column and the particles are separated according to size or charge.

摘要: Methods for testing proper operation of drop ejection units in a multi-ejector system are provided to determine whether the drop ejectors have been properly filled and/or the ejectors are emitting fully formed droplets. The methods include testing the ejectors prior to drop ejection. In this method, a priming system is used wherein fluid received by the priming system is ejected onto a test substrate to allow a scanner to determine the existence of the fluids at selected locations. The selected locations are correlated to the drop ejection units to determine which ejection units do not have biofluid or sufficient biofluid. A further method allows for ejection prior to printing, on a test substrate wherein testing for both the fullness of the ejector units as well as proper emission of the ejectors of droplets may be tested. The ejectors after being primed, eject the biofluids which are then scanned and correlated to each individual ejector. A further method provided is a laser scattering method wherein a laser beam is interposed between the drop emission path of the ejectors. Laser detection then determines whether a correlated drop ejector is properly emitting droplets.

摘要: A biofluid drop ejection unit for ejecting biofluid drops. A biofluid drop ejection mechanism of such a unit includes a transducer, which generates energy used to emit the biofluid drop. Further provided is a reagent cartridge or biofluid containment area which holds the biofluid. The reagent cartridge or biofluid containment area is configured to hold low volumes of biofluid and to avoid contamination of the biofluid. The reagent cartridge or biofluid containment area is in operational connection with the drop ejection mechanism such that upon operation of the drop ejection mechanism, biofluid drops are emitted. The biofluid drop ejection mechanism is a high efficiency device, and may be configured as two separate pieces or as a single disposable unit.
