Abstract:
An apparatus and method for filtering a liquid utilize a filter apparatus including a bypass filter, a full flow filter, and a flow balancing element for dividing a total inlet flow of fluid to the filter apparatus into a bypass portion, passing through the bypass filter, and a full flow portion, passing through the full flow filter. The bypass filter has a lower filtering efficiency than the full flow filter element, so that a venturi tube is not required for causing the bypass portion to pass through the bypass filter. The flow balancing element divides the flow into a desired bypass portion and a desired full flow portion, at a predetermined operating temperature. Below the operating temperature, the bypass portion increases and the full flow portion decreases, the bypass portion becoming greater that the full flow portion at a second predetermined temperature below the operating temperature.
Abstract:
A system for removing sediment from water is disclosed. The exemplary embodiments described herein disclose a system comprising a filter chamber, having a deck positioned inside to divide it into an upper chamber and a lower chamber. The deck may have a plurality of holes to hold filtration elements and also may have a ridge or a skirt or both. An inlet line may be tangentially connected to the filter chamber and introduce influent liquid into the filter chamber below the deck and outside of the skirt.
Abstract:
A recyclable, flexible filter element comprising a tubular, outer braided jacket supported by a helical spring. The bottom of the tube of the jacket is turned inside the helical spring and is sealed by a removable fastening device which is inserted into the bottom of the helical spring to engage the spring through the thickness of the braided jacket. The top of the outer braided jacket is fastened and sealed to a flange and washer assembly which also contains the top of the internal support spring.Additionally, a method of recycling a flexible filter element comprising the steps of disassembling the sealing element and removing the internal support components of the filter element from the external jacket by disengaging a fastening means at the bottom of the tube. The external jacket can then be refurbished and used with modified internal components. Alternatively, a new external jacket can be provided and used with other existing components of the filter element when the items are reassembled. Reassembly includes positioning the internal support spring within the outer jacket tube, turning the bottom of the outer jacket tube inside the internal support spring and then engaging the fastening means with the bottom of the spring to seal the fastening means to the turned up end of the bottom of the external jacket.
Abstract:
A fuel filter for a motor vehicle includes a housing made of a base Nylon 12 material to which are added stainless steel fibers to render the housing electrically conductive while retaining moldability. The electrically conductive housing permits charges generated by the fuel passing through the filtering media to be dissipated to the vehicle body, thereby preventing erosion of the housing and subsequent leaks.
Abstract:
A plug and filter assembly for a paint sprayer is characterized by a hand turnable knob that is rotatably coupled to a sealing plug to reduce the torque needed to install or remove the assembly from a paint head by axially advancing the plug into or out of an O-ring seal without having to turn the plug in the O-ring. The rotatable coupling is effected by a fastener having a head and a cylindrical shank portion which is received in an oversized central axial bore in the knob. The cylindrical shank portion has a diameter greater than that of a threaded end portion of the fastener secured in the plug and thus defines a shoulder which engages an axial end face of the plug positively to fix the axial spacing between the fastener head and plug to a distance greater than the axial length of a portion of the knob axially trapped between the fastener head and plug for free nonbinding rotation of the knob. A filter screen is coaxially connected to the plug by a coil spring and inner and outer end caps for insertion and removal of the assembly as a unit.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for regenerating a diatomaceous earth filter cake of a pressurized liquid filter system by liquidizing the diatomaceous earth filter cake formed on filter elements in the filter chamber of the system; by uniformly mixing with the liquidized diatomaceous earth the insoluble particles, or impurities, removed by the filter cake from liquid that has passed through the cake; and by reforming the fluid cake with the impurities uniformly distributed throughout the filter cake. The liquidizing of the filter cake and impurities and mixing of the diatomaceous earth and impurities result from oscillations induced in the liquid in the filter chamber by several cycles of rapid reversal of the flow of liquid through the filter chamber.
Abstract:
A multi-level, resin-impregnated, pleated, paper product filter assembly having spaced annular arrays of normally stable, pleats resiliently flexible circumferentially, a helical spring circumjacent between adjacent apices of the pleated arrays to resist collapse of paper product filters due to radial forces between adjacent filter levels and providing two-stage filtration in which the outer filter array comprises a filter pore size effecting first stage filtration of generally larger solids foreign matter, and the second or inner filter array provides second stage filtration of relatively finer foreign particles; in which perforated inner and outer cylindrical shells stabilize the filter cartridge or assembly in which the outer shell includes a plurality of spaced circumferentially disposed series of perforations to equalize pressure over the outer surface of the outer filter element; and in which an end cap and resilient seal combine with the outer and inner shells to coaxially clamp and insure against short-circuiting of the liquid being filtered.
