An apparatus and a method for controlling the lateral temperature control of hot material on a roller table of a hot roller mill employs adjustable heat-insulating panels below the hot material path, between the rollers of the roller table. Between each successive pair of rollers a number of the heat-insulating panels are arranged side by side, as a group spanning the width of the table. At least away from the entry end of the table, the panels of each group can be displaced selectively to allow a greater loss of heat from a central region of the hot material between its side edges than in the side edge regions themselves. The selective displacement of the panels can be preprogrammed to be determined by the characteristics of the hot material entering the roller table.

The invention provides a slab transport tire roller which is easy to assemble and wherein a heat-insulating material is protected to render the roller reliably operable over a prolonged period of time. The tire roller comprises tires fixedly arranged respectively on outer peripheral portions of a pipe for passing cooling water therethrough, and a tubular protective sleeve fitted around the pipe between the tires with the heat-insulating material accommodated in the sleeve. The protective sleeve is engaged with the pipe or with at least one of the tires adjacent to the sleeve rotatably therewith. The protective sleeve can be composed of a tubular sleeve member and side plates attached to respective open ends of the sleeve member.

The invention is directed to an oven installation as intermediate storage between the non-mandrel type coiling device for the strip-shaped slab located downstream of a thin-slab casting installation and its uncoiling device corresponding to the rolling mill downstream. A heating furnace system is provided for receiving finite lengths of workpieces from one or more continuous casters and form a supply of heated workpieces at a temperature suitable for rolling in a hot rolling mill. The system includes, in one aspect, a holding furnace receiving a workpiece during continuous casting until it is severed by a cutoff device to prevent unwanted cooling. The workpiece is fed from a holding furnace to a heating furnace wherein it is deposited onto one of a series of vertically spaced supports in a heated section where it remains static throughout the heating process. After heating the workpiece is removed from the stationary supports and returned to rollers of a hearth for discharge from the furnace to a rolling mill. In a second embodiment the holding furnace arrangement provides for separate holding furnaces to receive continuous castings from separate continuous casters and prevent unwanted cooling of the cast workpiece until cut to a finite length. The holding furnaces have doors and longitudinal sides walls to allow transfer of the workpieces seriatim through doors in a central heating furnace. The central heating furnace is aligned with the hearth as in the first embodiment and supplies workpieces serially through the heating furnace.
