In a hydrostatic bearing of the kind having at least three radially opposed chambers for receiving fluid under pressure, the invention provides a distributor in the form of a floating ring disposed around the shaft but rotationally fixed, ways through which fluid is selectively fed to the chambers, the inlets to the ways being controlled by the position of the ring, cavities with walls afforded by the ring and from which fluid passes to the inlets of the ways, and calibrated passages leading from the source of fluid under pressure to the respective cavities. In use when the shaft moves laterally towards any chamber the flow through that chamber is reduced and the pressure increased so that the pressure drop through the associated calibrated passage is correspondingly reduced. This leads to pressure differences between the cavities and consequent movement of the ring so as to impede the reduction of fluid supply to any chambers in which the pressure increases.

A system is disclosed for supporting a rotary load on a cushion of gas that is developed in a gas-bearing structure. Both radial and thrust loads are carried in the system as disclosed, and similar principles are utilized in the operation of each such component structure. A closure member cooperates with a load member, carrying a rotary load, to define the space in which a gas cushion is developed. To preserve the space relationship between the load member and the closure member within operating limits, the two structures are position servo-controlled. As disclosed herein, signals are developed that are indicative of the relationship between the members thereby defining the chamber in which the gas cushion is provided. A servo-control structure receives those signals to control the flow of gas for preserving the desired positional relationship by applying impact or impinging gas forces. As disclosed, a plurality of opposing ports are provided to discharge gas, and thereby exert impact forces to preserve the bearing elements within operative relative positions.

A pressure-lubricated bearing to allow a sliding movement of a load over a fixed planar bearing surface while keeping substantially constant the height of the load above that surface over a wide range load weights includes a chamber filled with oil under pressure from a source and sealed at the top by an elastic diaphragm which supports the load. The other end contains a port through which a bearing film of oil escapes between the chamber and the planar surface. An increase in load weight reduces the film thickness; but the resulting increase of the oil pressure in the chamber displaces the diaphragm (and hence the load) upwards to compensate. Similarly with decreases of load weight.

A method includes controlling a bearing fluid supply system to provide the bearing fluid to a hydrostatic bearing of the turbopump assembly. The bearing fluid includes a supercritical working fluid. The method also includes receiving data corresponding to a pressure of the bearing fluid measured at or near a bearing fluid drain fluidly coupled to the hydrostatic bearing, determining a thermodynamic state of the bearing fluid at or near the bearing fluid drain based at least in part on the received data, and controlling a backpressure regulation valve to throttle the backpressure regulation valve between an opened position and a closed position to regulate a backpressure in a bearing fluid discharge line to maintain the bearing fluid in a supercritical state in the hydrostatic bearing and/or at or near the bearing fluid drain.
