The present techniques include methods and systems for detecting a failure in a capacitor bank of an electrical drive system. Embodiments include using discharge resistors to discharge capacitors in the capacitor bank, forming a neutral node of the capacitor bank. In different capacitor configurations, the neutral node is measured, and the voltage is analyzed to determine whether a capacitor bank unbalance has occurred. In some embodiments, the node is a neutral-to-neutral node between the discharged side of the discharge resistors and a neutral side of the capacitor bank, or between the discharged side of the discharge resistors and a discharged side of a second set of discharge resistors. In some embodiments, the node is a neutral-to-ground node between the discharged side of the discharge resistors and a ground potential.

The system and method include DC motors, pulse-count driver circuitry for driving the motors, motor position sensing circuitry, and motor control circuitry. The system and method provide for improved motor current waveform sensing that is able to effectively reject false brake pulses, avoid erroneous processing due to fluctuating battery voltage levels, and reduce the sensitivity to variations in motor current signals due to dynamic motor load, manufacturing variation, system aging, temperature, brush bounce, EMI, and other factors. The system and method also include an improved ability to multiplex additional external motor drivers to the motor control circuitry, select between sequential and simultaneous drive modes using an SPI bit, and monitor the system controller for an error condition and simultaneously driver motors in response to the error condition.

A driving circuit for a brushless motor having a permanent-magnetic rotor is disclosed which is capable of positively carrying out starting of the motor and rapidly interrupting exciting current to protect the motor, when the rotor fails to rotate during the normal operation. The driving circuit includes transistor control circuits each including a capacitor, a PUT, and a capacitor charging circuit comprising a Zener diode and a resistor; and a resistor series circuit for flowing conductive signal current to a transistor switch which serves to supply current to exciting windings. The PUT is conductive to allow the transistor switch to be kept non-conductive when the capacitor is charged to a predetermined voltage.
