The lower nozzle portion includes a lower nozzle housing and a lower nozzle core positioned within the housing, the lower nozzle core having a flow chamber. A retaining ring secures the lower nozzle core to the lower nozzle housing. A stopper rod is positioned within the bore of the upper nozzle core and is threadedly attached to the lower nozzle core. The stopper rod selectively engages the upper nozzle core at an upper tapered surface of the bore to form a liquid tight seal and to control the flow of molten metal through the nozzle. By moving the lower nozzle housing and the lower nozzle core in an upward direction, the stopper rod is unseated from the tapered surface of the upper nozzle core, allowing the flow of molten metal through the bore in the upper nozzle core into and through the flow chamber of the lower nozzle core, for delivery to a casting dish or mold.

An actuator is connected to a slag control shape release member to move the release member from a first position engaged with the slag control shape to a second position disengaged from the slag control shape to allow the slag control shape to descend into the molten metal vessel. Upon the occurrence of a predetermined condition, such as a predetermined weight of molten metal in the vessel or a predetermined total time of molten metal discharge from the vessel, a controller generates a signal to the actuator to automatically release the slag control shape into the vessel. The controller is located remote from the actuator and transmits the activation signal to the actuator by radio frequency signals, directly through an electrical conductor, or to a light emitter which transmits a light beam to a photodetector mounted on the cover.

The rotor member is axially movable, i.e. loadable, to press the end sealing surface of the rotor member against the end sealing surface of the stator member at a compaction pressure sufficient to form a secondary seal for preventing leakage of molten metal.

The rotor fits within the recess in the stator, with the outer and inner surfaces thereof being complementarily positioned symmetrically about the axis. The stator and rotor are arranged in the region of the metal melt in the interior of a metallurgical vessel in and/or on the refractory lining of a side wall of the vessel and/or the refractory lining of the bottom of the vessel.

One of the pipes is fixedly mounted to a metallurgical vessel, and the other pipe is movable axially and/or rotatably relative to the one pipe to thereby selectively bring the openings to the two pipes relatively into and out of alignment. The inner pipe has adjacent an inner end thereof at a position inwardly of the opening therein a closure closing the interior of the inner pipe. The outer pipe defines therein a space forming a gas distribution chamber at a location confronting the closure. A gas, for example an inert gas, is introduced into the gas distribution chamber such that the gas passes therefrom between the sealing surfaces and into the openings.
