    摘要: A slag control shape is releasably mounted on a cover for a molten metal vessel. An actuator is connected to a slag control shape release member to retract the release member from a first position engaged with the slag control shape to a second position separated from the slag control shape to allow the slag control shape to freely drop into the molten metal receptacle. The actuating end of the actuator is located at an easily accessible operator position for remote actuation of the release member. In another embodiment, one end of a cable wound in a plurality of turns about a rotatable shaft mounted in a reel is attached to the slag control shape. A spring biasingly engages the shaft to control the rate of rotation of the shaft and thereby the rate of payout of the cable and the rate of descent of the slag control shape into the molten metal vessel. In another embodiment, the release member is mounted on a lid removably mountable in a bore in the cover and the actuator is mounted on the cover and releasibly connected to the release member. In yet another embodiment, the release member is mounted on a base which is in turn removably mounted in the bore in the cover. The hanger of a slag control shape extends through an aperture in the base and is engaged by the release member on the base.

    摘要: In a method for controlling the final carbon content of a steel produced by an oxygen steelmaking process, the weight of the molten steel in the vessel is continuously monitored during the process by means of load cells. The load cells may be placed under the vessel support structure or alternatively within the vessel support structure with trunnions which support the vessel disposed to rest on the vessel. It is found that a minimum weight point occurs in the charge consistently at the same carbon content during steelmaking. The detection of this point is used in the establishment of a relationship between oxygen added after this point and the final carbon content of the steel. Providing that the initial charge weight is fairly constant and the amount of oxygen added after the minimum weight point is known, the relationship, conveniently in the form of a calibration curve, may be used to predict or control the final carbon conent of the steel.

    摘要: A method is provided for refining molten metal containing an impurity which is oxidizable in preference to one or more selected constituent elements of the metal and which forms a gaseous oxide, the method comprising injecting oxygen and a diluent gas into the molten metal contained in a vessel so as to reduce the proportion of the impurity in the metal by evolution as the gaseous oxide, weighing the vessel during refining to establish a point at which the weight of the vessel contents changes significantly due to preferential oxidation of the one or more selected constituent elements, initiating at the point a reduction in the ratio of oxygen: diluent gas to as to reduce the rate of oxidation of the one or more selected constituent elements relative to the impurity and continuing injection until the proportion of the impurity is reduced to the desired level.

    摘要: An iron melting furnace has a refractory lined furnace body having a top opening through which raw materials including a raw material iron source, a carbonaceous material and a slag forming material may be introduced. A heating system is provided for injecting oxygen-containing gas into the furnace body to combust the carbonaceous material, whereby combustion heat can melt the raw material iron source to generate molten iron and molten slag to form a molten iron and slag bath. A plurality of tap holes penetrate the furnace body and are provided at positions different from one another in a height direction of the furnace body, and a refractory filling which is different from the refractory liner material fills at least one of the tap holes such that molten iron or slag in the furnace is unable to flow through the tap hole being filled with the refractory material.

    摘要: A slag control shape is releasably mounted on a cover for a molten metal vessel. An actuator is connected to a slag control shape release member to move the release member from a first position engaged with the slag control shape to a second position disengaged from the slag control shape to allow the slag control shape to descend into the molten metal vessel. Upon the occurrence of a predetermined condition, such as a predetermined weight of molten metal in the vessel or a predetermined total time of molten metal discharge from the vessel, a controller generates a signal to the actuator to automatically release the slag control shape into the vessel. The controller is located remote from the actuator and transmits the activation signal to the actuator by radio frequency signals, directly through an electrical conductor, or to a light emitter which transmits a light beam to a photodetector mounted on the cover.
