A method of engraving which accommodates changes in copper hardness, variations in head linearities, worn stylus, and the like. The method involves the cutting of midtone test cells, as well as highlight and full width test cells. The widths of the test cells are measured and used to establish slopes and offsets for adjustment lines, which in turn are applied inversely to transform a desired cell width into an engraving drive signal. The technique assures that the computed engraving drive signal will produce the desired cell width.

An engraver having an engraving signal generating system for engraving a workpiece. The engraver includes a setup circuit enabling direct dimensional control of the cavities engraved by the engraver. Controls are provided for setting at least one of a plurality of parameters, such as a black cell width, a black channel width and a highlight cell width. These parameters are fed to the setup circuit which translates them into multiplication factors for an AC signal and a video signal. The multiplied signals are combined with an offset signal to produce an engraving signal.

An engraving system and method having a non-volatile memory loaded with error coefficients. The error coefficients represent previously experienced differences between computed cell configuration values and corresponding configuration values for cells actually engraved. Sets of error coefficients are tabulated and stored in the memory along with associated setup parameters. Setup of the engraving system for a new job is swiftly accomplished by using values of the setup parameters to retrieve sets of approximate error coefficients, from which interpolated values are obtained. The interpolated values of the error coefficients then are used for calculating configuration control parameters such as AC gain, video gain and white offset.

A method and apparatus for engraving wherein the engraver includes a merge system for merging image data to be engraved in a manner which will reduce or eliminate "halo" and/or "ghost" images. The method utilizes a processor in an engraver for creating image data comprising continuous tone data and line work data. The method further involves the steps of locating transition data corresponding to where the continuous tone data and line work data meet; and processing at least some of the image data to provide processed image data using the transition data located in the locating step. The engraver has an engraving bed; a headstock and a tailstock located on the engraving bed for rotatably supporting a cylinder to be engraved; an engraving head located on the engraving bed for engraving the cylinder; an image data generator coupled to the engraving head, the image data generator being capable of creating image data comprising continuous tone data, line work data and transition data. The image data generator comprises a locator for locating the transition data and a processor associated with the locator for processing at least some of the image data to provide processed image data using the transition data located by the locator. The system and method facilitate selectively enhancing at least one edge or area within a data set, such as either a line work data set or a continuous tone data set, while selectively avoiding enhancing other areas, such as an area between a line work area and continuous tone area of an image.

A system for locating a plurality of engraving heads on an engraver wherein a plurality of engraving heads are automatically positioned into a predetermined configuration. A mechanism for positioning the engraving heads preferably includes a leadscrew and a drive nut which is rotatable relative to the leadscrew. In addition, each of the engraving heads preferably includes a rotatable drive nut with a respective motor for rotating the nut whereby the heads may be selectively positioned into a predetermined configuration. In a further aspect of the invention, the engraving heads are mounted on a carriage which is movable in an axial direction relative to a cylinder to be engraved. The heads are selectively positionable on the carriage and the carriage includes a nut threadably engaged with a leadscrew whereby the carriage may be driven in an axial direction relative to the cylinder to be engraved. In yet another aspect of the invention, a method is provided for engraving a cylinder including mounting a cylinder in the engraver, automatically adjusting a plurality of engraving heads into a predetermined configuration, and engraving a plurality of images onto the cylinder.

The method and apparatus permit the engraver to accommodate cylinders of differing geometries, including a range of lengths, diameters and mounting configurations. The engraver includes a headstock and a tailstock which cooperate to rotatably support a cylinder at an engraving station in the engraver. The engraver includes a cylinder handling system having at least one cylinder supporting the cylinder between the headstock and the tailstock during the loading and unloading of the cylinder. The cylinder handling system includes a driver for driving the cylinder support towards and away from the engraving station until the headstock and the tailstock engage and rotatably support the cylinder. Once the cylinder is rotatably supported between the headstock and the tailstock, then the cylinder support is retracted. The cylinder support includes a telescoping support member having a support nest for engaging and supporting the cylinder at the engraving station.

The tool projects through a slit in a housing, the slit having a height greater than that of the characters to be engraved and a length longer than the series of characters to be engraved. Mechanical structure is contained in the housing to drive the tool along X and Y axes for forming the characters and along a Z axis to engage the work. The beginning and end of the engraving operation as well as character size and sequence are all controlled by a computer.
