A light source is used to illuminate a sawn portion of a piece of wood and exposed surfaces of the saw blade on both sides of the sawn portion. The sawn portion and the exposed surfaces of the saw blade are then imaged substantially concurrently using a single image generator. At least one geometric characteristic of the sawn portion and at least one geometric characteristic of the saw blade are determined based on the imaging.

A feedback compensating apparatus for adjusting the working condition of a working machine of a working system adapted to process working portions of successive workpieces under control of a machine controller, which determines the working condition from an extraneous signal. The apparatus is used with the controller and a measuring device for measuring the dimensions of the processed working portions of the workpieces, and includes a device for obtaining dimensional data based on outputs of the measuring device during and/or after a working operation of the machine on each workpiece. The dimensional data include a dimensional error of the processed working portions, and a variable indicative of a tendency of change in the dimensional error. The apparatus further includes a device for determining the extraneous signal based on the dimensional data, and applying the signal to the machine controller to adjust the working condition of the machine. Also disclosed is a method of processing workpieces using the apparatus.

An error detection apparatus and method for use with engravers, such as gravure engravers. An error value E corresponding to the difference between a set of predetermined setup parameters and actual measurement of a portion of an engraved area on the cylinder is determined. The error value E is then used to adjust the engraver to engrave an actual cut or etch in accordance with the set of predetermined setup parameters. The error detection and correction system is suitable for providing a closed-loop system for engraving a cylinder. The apparatus and method may be used during initial setup or during normal operation of the engraver. A method is disclosed comprising the steps of engraving ink receptive cells in the surface of a rotating gravure printing cylinder consisting of the steps of generating a cell width command signal comprising a series of cell width commands, engraving the cells by using the cell width command signal to urge an engraving stylus into periodic engraving contact with the surface, measuring actual widths of cells which have been engraved as aforesaid, and adjusting the cell width command signal in correspondence with differences between the actual widths and the cell width commands. In another embodiment of the invention, an improved measuring system and method for measuring an engraved area is provided, the improved system and method utilize a system and method for automatically or self-calibrating an image system to provide accurate measurements of engraved areas imaged. The system and method determine a calibration factor which is utilized by a processor which is applied to a pixel span associated with an imaged engraved area to provide a measurement of a dimension of the engraved area. The calibration factor is determined using a ratio of a pixel span between imaged engraved areas to a known distance between the engraved areas which, in turn, provides a dimension for a pixel in real units, such as microns. The calibration factor obtained may then be applied to pixel representations of engraved areas to provide actual measurements.

The work is ground in accordance with command data Zx.sup.(i), and then a shape of a ground surface is measured by means of a measuring device (12). The measurement data is filtered to thereby record shape error data e.sub.x.sup.(i). There is established new command data Zx.sup.(i+1) by adding compensation, and then the work is ground again with the thus established new command data. The compensation refers to past command data, and determines new command data to be equal to an expected value of the past command data. In accordance with the present invention, it is possible to obtain higher shape accuracy with the less number of processing steps, extract real shape indicating signals out of measurement data, and avoid misregistration of a work which would be caused by fixing/removing.

The invention primarily concerns improvements to turning, grinding milling and other machining processes using electro-optical sensors for analyzing images or patterns related to tools used to work objects. Also disclosed are unique electro-optical sensing methods and apparatus in their own right, capable of high accuracy measurement required for modern industry. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a two axis image analysis of the backlit tool edge is performed to determine tool position, damage, or wear, and where desired appropriate control steps taken to reposition or change the tool. In another preferred embodiment the tool itself is equipped with optically sensed contact members according to the invention to measure the part produced with the tool, or to determine the deflection of the tool.

The engraving method and apparatus involves, among other things, processing a plurality of image data; modifying at least a portion of the image data and generating a signal corresponding thereto; and then exciting an engraving device in response to the signal in order to engrave a pattern of engraved areas. The engraving method and apparatus facilitate adjusting a characteristic of at least one of said plurality of engraved areas in order to change a spatial relationship between said at least one of said plurality of engraved areas and another of said plurality of engraved areas to provide, for example, a non-regular or non-periodic spacing of engraved areas. The engraving method and apparatus provides a shaping data generator for generating shaping data to be used to modify the image data corresponding to an area to be engraved to redefine at least a portion of said data to provide an engraved area having a desired shape.

The error coefficients represent previously experienced differences between computed cell configuration values and corresponding configuration values for cells actually engraved. Sets of error coefficients are tabulated and stored in the memory along with associated setup parameters. Setup of the engraving system for a new job is swiftly accomplished by using values of the setup parameters to retrieve sets of approximate error coefficients, from which interpolated values are obtained. The interpolated values of the error coefficients then are used for calculating configuration control parameters such as AC gain, video gain and white offset.
