The present invention is directed to a hair dyeing composition containing a dissociative azo dye of the following general formula (1) A-N═N-B (1)wherein “A” represents a phenyl or naphthyl group which may be substitued; “B” represents an atomic group containing a dissociative proton, with the proviso “A” and “B” are free of sulfo, carboxyl and quaternary ammonium groups. Additionally, the present invention describes a method of dyeing human or animal hair by using such a dye and the use of this direct azo dye for dyeing human or animal hair. The use of this direct azo dye can impart the hair with an extremely vivid color and has less color fading over time.

There is disclosed a process for coupling one or more different diazo components with resorcinol on an industrial scale. The process comprises adjusting and stabilizing the coupling pH of the resorcinol prior to the reaction with the aid of a buffer system and keeping it constant during the coupling reaction or reactions by controlling the ratio of flow of the streams of the diazo component or components and the base. The process makes it possible to prepare mono- and polyazo dyes in excellent uniform quality and yield.

A nondiffusible sulfonamido compound which is alkali-cleavable upon oxidation to release a diffusible photographically useful material, said nondiffusible sulfonamido compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein: (a) R.sup.1 is alkyl, aryl sulfamyl, carbamyl, carbonamido, carbonyl, carbonyloxy or sulfonamido;(b) R.sup.2 is alkyl having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, aryl, or alkylphenyl having from 7 to 12 carbon atoms;(c) R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently alkyl, or aryl, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4, taken together, form a fused carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring;(d) NHSO.sub.2 PUG represents a sulfonamido group;(e) PUG represents a photographically useful group; and(f) at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, or R.sup.4, or any combination thereof, provides a molecular configuration of such size or shape as to render the compound nondiffusible under alkaline processing conditions, is useful as redox releaser in photosensitive elements, photographic film units and in processes for transferring and/or retaining a photographic image in color diffusion transfer units. These elements, film units and processes produce retained color images having substantially reduced minimum densities.

Substituted 2-nitro-2'hydroxyazobenzenes are prepared by adding an aqueous mineral acid solution of a diazotized o-nitroaniline to a strongly alkaline lower alkanol or aqueous lower alkanol solution of a substituted phenol, containing sufficient alkali metal hydroxide to assure a pH value substantially over 11 and an excess of hydroxyl ion in the reaction mixture even after all the acidic diazonium salt solution is added, wherein the reaction solvent mixture is at least 50% by weight of lower alkanol, at a reaction temperature between -15.degree. Disperse dyestuffs of the formula ##STR1## wherein Q.sub.1 and Q.sub.2 are hydrogen or the group V-(A-O).sub.n Z, but do not at the same time represent hydrogen, A -- denotes an alkylene group, V -- denotes a direct bond or a bridge member, Z -- denotes hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or acyl and N -- denotes an integer from 2-10 and the rings A, B and D can be further substituted. The dyestuffs are suitable for dyeing polyester fibres from an aqueous liquor by the exhaustion process since they are distinguished by a good affinity and build-up power. The dyeings are very clear and display good general fastness properties, such as fastness to light, sublimation and measuring.
