A stack supporting container car includes a plurality of car units interconnected by articulating connector with the end units provided with conventional railroad couplers. Each car unit includes side sills and body bolsters supported on trucks. The side sills and body bolsters are spaced apart sufficiently to allow the bottom portion of a short lower container to pass therethrough with the weight of the stack of containers being supported only by four corner feet connected to and projecting below the side sills. Bulkheads with fixed side and end container restraining walls and with movable corner engaging mechanisms are provided on the car unit to selectively restrain either a short or a long container supported upon the lower container in transport position on the car unit. The upper and lower surfaces of containers provide ample clearance to safely move over the rails and under bridges or the like.

To load several self-propelled vehicles in a container with optimum utilization of the available volume in the container, the front axle and wheels are replaced by a smaller auxiliary wheel which is attached to the front end of the vehicle. The rear wheels are replaced by smaller auxiliary wheels. The resulting reduction in vehicle height and front end width makes it possible to locate more vehicles than previously possible into an open top, shipping container. The vehicles as modified for shipping are still driveable and steerable and thus, may be loaded and unloaded from the container by driving the vehicle under its own power.

A vehicle for transporting heavy loads on parallel tracks is disclosed. Two of the wheels of the vehicle are fixedly mounted to the vehicle frame, while the remaining wheels are mounted so that they can vertically adjust to deviations in the height of the rail track. In this manner, heavy loads can be transported on the rail tracks without any particular wheel becoming overloaded.In the preferred embodiment, the adjustable wheels are supported by bell crank levers which are themselves connected to one another by a parallelogram linkage arrangement.

The present invention comprises an elongated container which may be carried either by rail or on a highway by a conventional truck tractor. The container includes a pair of dolly engaging pins fixed to its floor at the opposite ends thereof. The pins are adapted to engage a fifth wheel mechanism mounted on a dolly having wheels thereon adapted to engage conventional railroad rails. The dolly includes two fifth wheel mechanisms, one for receiving the pin from one container and the other for receiving the pin from another container. Also mounted on the undersurface of the container is a fifth wheel carriage which is adapted to slide longitudinally with respect to the container and which is adapted to engage the fifth wheel mechanism of a conventional truck tractor. A pair of truck wheels are mounted on a carriage which can be mounted to the rear end of the container for use on a highway when being pulled by a truck tractor.

The motor module supports a platform, suspended from it by hoisting cables, which in turn has jaws engageable with the top of the vehicle for lifting it off the surface and subsequently lowering it onto a load. The vehicle is powered by a storage battery which is recharged during overhead travel from a bus bar extending along the track. Means are provided for preventing the disengagement of the jaws from the vehicle as long as the same is suspended.

The disclosure relates to a high speed one car railroad vehicle that can be 500 to 2,000 feet long and is in the form of a millepede like running gear with multiple sets of closely spaced wheels and carrying load support platforms or decks for freight or the like, in which the running gear extends the length of the train and comprises a continuous center sill structure that is sufficiently flexible horizontally to accommodate curves and includes closely spaced wheel modules, each of which is provided with a pair of small diameter wheels that ride on the respective track rails, with the wheel modules being spaced so that the wheels are disposed every four feet on either side of the train. The center sill structure is suspended from the wheels by individual knee action suspensions connecting the wheels to the center sill structure, and where the vehicle is self-propelled, each wheel is individually driven by its own motor, with 100 per cent dynamic braking being employed. The wheel modules also each include a cross bearer or beam plate member that overlies the wheels thereof, on which members rest the train load support decks that are in the form of freight container receiving deck plates. The deck plates are sprung on the wheels underlying the same by employing an elongate fluid tube spring on either side of the center sill for each deck plate. The respective fluid tube springs extend the length of the respective deck plates, and each deck plate is supported only by its underlying fluid tube springs, which are interposed between the respective wheel suspensions and the cross bearers. The individual decks are pivotally connected to the center sill adjacent either end of same and rest of rollers mounted on the respective cross bearers that are oriented so that the center sill may readily shift laterally of the respective decks as required to smoothly round curves in the track.

A side structure extends along each side of the railway car each having an upper and a lower longitudinally extending chord member. A plurality of crossframe structures are suspended from the upper chord members and extend downwardly to a position below the lower chord members and are adjustably movable along the length of the upper chord member for positioning at selected intervals. Containers in the lower tier rest on the crossframe structures which may be positioned at selected intervals along the length of the car to accommodate containers of varying lengths. Corner pedestals on the upper chord members support the upper tier of containers and may be adjustably positioned along the length of the upper chord members to support containers of various lengths in the upper tier over the containers in the lower tier.
