摘要: The present invention relates to a single-mode single-polarization optical fiber which is capable of functioning as an in-line fiber polarizer which allows only one polarization of the fundamental mode to propagate along the fiber. In structure, the fiber comprises a central core region (10) and a cladding region (12) which is substantially in contact with the central core region. The various regions are formed such that the refractive index of an outer cladding region is greater than the refractive index of an inner cladding region but less than that of the core region. The arrangement of the present invention produces stress-birefringence between the cladding regions and the central core region sufficient to split the two orthogonal polarizations (n.sub..parallel. and n.sub..perp.) of the fundamental mode such that the desired polarization propagates freely and the undesired polarization is attenuated by tunneling through the cladding layers.

摘要: A process for manufacturing a preform from which is drawn an optical fiber, the core of which comprises layers of different glass composition. Layers of glass soot are deposited on the flat, longitudinally extending sides of a thin, elongated mandrel. Adjacent soot coatings have different refractive indices. A preliminary coating of cladding glass soot is deposited on the laminated soot structure. The resultant composite body is consolidated and stretched to form a rod or core structure upon which the final coating of cladding soot is deposited. The resultant composite body is consolidated and drawn into an optical fiber. In a modification of the this method, the mandrel is removed after the planar soot coatings and preliminary coating of cladding soot are deposited thereon. The resultant soot body is consolidated and processed as described previously.

摘要: A single-core polarization-maintaining dispersion compensation micro-structured optical fiber comprises a fiber core, a first layer of air holes surrounding the fiber core, the cladding defects on the x-axis, the cladding defects on the y-axis, and the cladding. The air holes in the fiber cross section are arranged in the equilateral triangle lattice. Three consecutive air holes are omitted to form a solid area. This solid area is the fiber core. There are two cladding defects along the x-axis. Their centers are respectively located at the two vertices of the hexagon on the x-axis, which is formed by the fourth air hole ring from the core exclusive the central air hole. Each cladding defect along the x-axis contains 7 air holes and goes through from the core by only 1 layer of air holes. There are also two cladding defects along the y-axis.

摘要: An optical fiber comprises a core having an elliptical cross section and a cladding having a circular cross section. The core has an aspect ratio between 2 and 40. The core and the cladding have a common central axis with the core being enclosed by the cladding. The difference of a refractive index of the cladding to a refractive index of the core is between 1×10−2 and 1.5×10−1. A trench is located between the core and the cladding. The trench has a uniform width and encircles the core. The refractive index of the trench is lower than the refractive index of the cladding.

摘要: This application relates generally to an optical fiber for the delivery of infrared light where the polarization state of the light entering the fiber is preserved upon exiting the fiber and the related methods for making thereof. The optical fiber has a wavelength between about 0.9 μm and 15 μm, comprises at least one infrared-transmitting glass, and has a polarization-maintaining (PM) transverse cross-sectional structure. The infrared-transmitting, polarization-maintaining (IR-PM) optical fiber has a birefringence greater than 10−5 and has applications in dual-use technologies including laser power delivery, sensing and imaging.

摘要: A system comprises a waveguide apparatus comprising a plurality of input waveguides, a multimode waveguide, and a guided-wave transition coupling the plurality of input waveguides to the multimode waveguide. The system further comprises at least one light source configured to excite in turn each of a plurality of the input waveguides, or each of a plurality of combinations of the input waveguides, thereby generating a plurality of different light patterns in turn at an output of the waveguide apparatus. The waveguide apparatus is configured to direct each of the plurality of different light patterns to a target region. The system further comprises at least one detector configured to detect light transmitted, reflected or emitted from the target region in response to each of the different light patterns, and to output signals representing the detected light.
