Abstract:
The present application relates to combination treatments for bacterial infections. For example, the application relates to the use of one or more β-lactam antibiotics and one or more compounds of Formula I: (I) for treatment of a metallo-B-lactamase-expressing bacterial infection or a disease, disorder or condition arising from a metallo-B-lactamase-expressing bacterial infection.
Abstract:
Hydrophobic CNCs were successfully prepared by grafting amine- and thiol terminated hydrocarbons to CNCs that have been previously coated with plant polyphenols. Hydrocarbons of various chain lengths can be used to tune the hydrophobicity of the modified CNCs. After the surface modification process, CNCs can be easily redispersed in nonpolar solvents highlighting the potential of the hydrophobic CNCs in, for example, CNC reinforced nanocomposites and non-aqueous formulations.
Abstract:
A method for controlling a switched reluctance motor, the method comprising: receiving a reference torque Te ref; receiving an indication of a present rotor position θ for the switched reluctance motor; determining at least one of: a reference current ie—ref(k−1) for a (k−1)th phase, a reference current ie—ref(k) for a (k)th phase, and a reference current ie—ref(k+1) for a (k+1)th phase; and outputting the determined at least one reference current to a current controller operatively coupled to the switched reluctance motor, wherein the determined at least one reference current is based on an objective function comprising the squares of phase current and derivatives of current reference.
Abstract:
Described are methods and compositions for treating cancer that include a dopamine receptor (DR) antagonist such as thioridazine and a chemotherapeutic agent. Optionally, the chemotherapeutic agent is a DNA synthesis inhibitor such as cytarabine or a microtubule inhibitor such as paclitaxel or docetaxel. The methods and compositions are useful for the treatment of cancers such as acute myeloid leukemia.

A hybrid powertrain for an aircraft may include a drive shaft, the drive shaft, an internal combustion engine to selectably drive the drive shaft, a propeller coupled to the drive shaft and an electric motor having a stator and a rotor and operable to selectably drive the drive shaft. The drive shaft may extend through the electric motor. The rotor may be coupled to the drive shaft to rotate with the drive shaft and the rotor is a flywheel for the internal combustion engine.
Abstract:
A powertrain system for a vehicle is provided. The powertrain system includes an internal combustion engine, a first gearset connected to the internal combustion engine, a first electric machine connected to the first gearset, a drivetrain gear for connection to a drivetrain of the vehicle, a second gearset connecting the first gearset to the drivetrain gear, a second electric machine, and at least one dynamic clutch selectively coupling the second electric machine to the first electric machine, the first gearset, and the second gearset. In a first mode of operation, the at least one dynamic clutch couples the second electric machine and the first electric machine. In a second mode of operation, the at least one dynamic clutch couples the second electric machine and the first gearset. In a third mode of operation, the at least one dynamic clutch couples the second electric machine and the second gearset.
Abstract:
A distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser assembly is disclosed. The DFB laser assembly includes a substrate extending along a longitudinal direction, a first electrode layer disposed on a first side surface thereof, an active region layer disposed on a second side surface thereof opposite the first side surface, and a spacer layer disposed on the active region layer. A ridge extends away from the active region layer and along the longitudinal direction. The DFB laser assembly also includes a grating layer integrated between the active region layer and the ridge, the grating layer including a plurality of sampled gratings along the longitudinal direction, and a second electrode layer electrically coupled to the first electrode layer, the second electrode layer comprising independent electrode sections disposed on the top ridge surface and each ridge side surface.
Abstract:
Described is a method for assessing aortic valve calcification using contrast-enhanced CT. The method comprises: receiving CT images of the aortic valve; pre-processing received images to have a field of view focused on an aortic root corresponding to the aortic valve; implementing a fast-marching method for the pre-processed images to segment the aortic valve from surrounding tissue to generate an aortic root model; determining multiple principal axes and multiple landmark points based on the pre-processed images and the aortic root model to define a local coordinate system relative to leaflets of the aortic valve; generating a calcification model based on the pre-processed images and aortic root model by iteratively changing an initial estimate of calcific HU threshold until a minimum false positive rate FPR criterion is reached; and generating an indicator quantifying calcification of the aortic valve based on the calcification model, the principal axes and the landmark points.
Abstract:
This disclosure relates to methods of fabricating self-assembled 3D cell sheets. In one embodiment, the cell sheets are formed by seeding cells to a monolayer density of at least 65% with a culture medium on to a substantially flat substrate having low surface energy and incubating cells on the substrate under time and temperature conditions to form a cell sheet.
