Abstract:
A process for printing images and subsequently bonding the image to a substrate by activating bonding through the application of energy. An ink may comprise reactive functional groups that are blocked to prevent reaction of reactive components during printing of the image by the digital imaging device. The ink is solid at ambient temperature, and may be liquefied after the ink is installed in the digital imaging device. Heat used to achieve phase change of the ink does not disable, by removal or otherwise, the blocking agent. After the image is printed by the imaging device, the reactive components are activated by an energy source, which may be heat, to promote chemical cross-linking and bonding of the image permanently onto a substrate. The substrate may be an intermediate substrate that provides a transfer sheet for subsequent transfer of the image to a final substrate. The formed image, including the colorant, is bonded to the substrate by the reactive components.
Abstract:
Power converters having reduced body diode conduction loss, reduced reverse recovery loss and lower switching noise, among other benefits, have a resonant capacitor Cr connected across an unfiltered output. The resonant capacitor Cr resonates with the leakage inductance Lk of the transformer. The resonant capacitor and leakage inductance are selected such that ½ a LC resonance period is equal to an ON time of each secondary switch S1 S2. The resonance provides zero current switching for secondary switches S1 S2, eliminates zero body diode conduction during dead times, and eliminates reverse recovery losses in the secondary switches. The present invention is applicable to many different circuit topologies such as full bridge, active clamp forward, push-pull forward, and center-tap secondary. The present converters provide high energy conversion efficiency and high frequency operation.

Abstract:
An optical device for processing an optical signal includes a crystal wedge, a polarization modulator, and a reflective element. The crystal wedge spatially separates an input optical signal into a first beam component having a first polarization state and a second beam component having a second polarization state. The crystal wedge has an optical axis arranged at an optical axis angle such that the first beam component and the second beam component converge. The polarization modulator changes the polarization state of the first beam component and the polarization state of the second beam component in response to a control signal. The reflective element reflects the first beam component and the second beam component such that the crystal wedge spatially recombines a portion of the first beam component having the second polarization state with a portion of the second beam component having the first polarization state to form an output optical signal.
Abstract:
The present invention is a wavelength-selective optical transmission system that includes a first waveguide for transmitting a multiplexed optical signal therethrough. The system further includes a second waveguide coupled to the first waveguide wherein a least one of the first and second waveguides have a set of wavelength-selective Bragg gratings disposed near a coupling section between the first and second waveguides to reflect a reflecting optical signal back to the first waveguide and for transmitting a contra-directional optical signal and a co-directional optical signal having respectively a contra-directional selected wavelength and a co-directional selected wavelength corresponding to the Bragg gratings. One of the contra-directional and co-directional wavelengths is chosen as a designated wavelength, and the reflecting optical signal and one of the contra-directional or co-directional optical signals are outside of a predefined range surrounding the designated wavelength.
Abstract:
A color image is digitally printed onto an intermediate transfer medium. The image is subsequently transferred from the intermediate transfer medium to a final substrate, which may be a cellulosic textile, such as cotton. Bonding of the color images is provided by the reaction between compounds selected from each of two chemical groups contained in the intermediate transfer medium. The first groups comprises compounds with functional groups capable of reacting with active hydrogen, such as isocyanate or epoxy groups. The second group comprises compounds with functional groups containing active hydrogen, or compounds with functional groups containing active hydrogen after a conversion process. The functional groups of one or both reactive chemical groups may be protected either by blocking with internal or external blocking agents or by a physical barrier such as encapsulating agents. The blocking agents are removed by the application of energy, such as heat, during the transfer of the image from the intermediate transfer medium to the final substrate. The intermediate transfer medium may be comprised of additional components which may be combined with either or both of the above two chemical groups, or applied as separate layers. Examples of such components are a thermally expandable material, an exothermic chemical, a release agent, and/or absorbent material. Transferred images so produced have a soft hand, particularly when applied to a textile, and excellent fade and abrasion resistance.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for identifying a language corresponding to a string of data include receiving a data string and dividing the data string into coded character sequences for each of a plurality of languages. A length of one or more coded character sequences varies among different languages for coded character sequences having a particular number of characters. The coded character sequences are analyzed to calculate, for each of the plurality of languages, a probability that the data string corresponds to language. The calculated probabilities are compared among the languages, and a language is identified as corresponding to the data string based on the comparison.

Manufacturing processes and related systems are disclosed which provide for fast, reliable, inexpensive production of customizable goods. Types of manufacturing equipment elements are individually equipped with various sensors and effecters, and associated with a software agent running on a dedicated processor. The elements may be made mobile, perhaps by placing the individual pieces of equipment on a movable trolley, and further equipped with a wireless transceiver. In this way, the elements may be easily assembled for a manufacturing process, with minimal human intervention required. Moreover, the elements may execute the steps of the manufacturing process in an autonomous, intelligent fashion.

Abstract:
A method for the ligation of expressed proteins which utilizes inteins, for example the RIR1 intein from Methanobacterium thermotrophicum , is provided. Constructs of the Mth RIR1 intein in which either the C-terminal asparagine or N-terminal cysteine of the intein are replaced with alanine enable the facile isolation of a protein with a specified N-terminal, for example, cysteine for use in the fusion of two or more expressed proteins. The method involves the steps of generating a C-terminal thioester-tagged target protein and a second target protein having a specified N-terminal via inteins, such as the modified Mth RIR1 intein, and ligating these proteins. A similar method for producing a cyclic or polymerized protein is provided. Modified inteins engineered to cleave at their C-terminus or N-terminus, respectively, and DNA and plasmids encoding these modified inteins are also provided.
