The incorporation of an alkaline earth hydroxide or oxide in a non-nitrogen-containing polymer results in the reduction of carbon monoxide and visible smoke generated during burning of the polymer. The polymer may be an elastomer, (that is a rubber), a thermoplastic, a thermoplastic elastomer, or a thermoset containing from 25 to about 400 parts of the alkaline earth metal compound per 100 parts of the polymer. A small amount of transition metal salts has further been found to greatly reduce the amount of carbon monoxide generated.

An acyclic alkane soluble anionic polymerization initiator includes a mixture of from about 90 to about 10 parts by weight of a lithio amine having the general formula A.sub.1 Li and from about 10 to about 90 parts by weight of at least one other lithio amine having the general formula A.sub.2 Li. A.sub.1 and A.sub.2 are selected from the dialkyl, alkyl, cycloalkyl and dicycloalkyl amine radicals and cyclic amine radicals. There is also provided a method of forming a mixture of anionic polymerization initiators, a functionalized polymer and a method of forming a functionalized polymer.

A composite comprises a coating which is adhered to an unsaturated usually cured elastomer utilizing a rubber-urethane adhesive having azoeneophile functionalities such as a dihydrocarbylazodicarboxylate, a dihydrocarbylazodicarboxamide, a dihydrocarbylazoesteramide, or the oxidized reaction product of a urethane prepolymer and a carbazate. A particularly useful carrier for the azoeneophiles is an isocyanate-terminated polyol prepolymer. The composite is useful when a paint is applied to consumer goods, e.g., as a flexible polyurethane paint applied to the sidewalls of tires, as a decorated article, as an adhesively bonded elastomeric composite, and the like.
