A wireless mobile communication device includes a first processor configured to execute a software application and a second processor configured to manage wireless communication over a wireless network. The processors are located in the same communication device and configured for one of the processors to send data to the other processor under a protocol. In accordance with this protocol, if the sending processor does not receive a receipt acknowledgement for the sent data from the other processor before the end of a resend time period measured from when the data was sent, then the sending processor resends the data to the other processor after the end of the resend time period. However, the sending processor does receive the acknowledgement before the end of the resend time period, then the sending processor does not resend the data to the other processor.

An automatic gain control (AGC) and DC estimation and correction technique for wireless communication devices is provided. An AGC signal, which controls a gain applied to a received signal by a gain stage to generate a scaled signal, is assigned one of a relatively small number of values in accordance with the amplitude of the scaled signal. An estimate of a DC offset in the scaled signal corresponding to each value of the AGC signal is stored in a memory. A DC estimation arrangement then reads the stored estimate associated with the particular value of the AGC signal from the memory and generates a current DC estimate based thereon. The current estimate is then used to correct the scaled signal for DC offset and to update the stored estimate.

Methods that allow a mobile device to communicate with a wireless communications network via device-to-device communication when the device is out of range of the network are provided. One method, at a first mobile device, comprises receiving a message from a second mobile device, adding information to the message, forwarding the message to a network if a network connection is available for the first mobile device, and forwarding the message to a third mobile device if no network connection is available. Another method at a mobile device comprises receiving an indication that an emergency condition exists, sending a message from the device to a network element if a network connection between the mobile device and network element exists, and sending the message from the device to a second mobile device if no network connection between the mobile device and a network element exists. Mobile devices configured to perform these methods are also provided.

The system includes a controller configured to monitor a status of the mobile device and, upon an initiation event, initiate a data transfer process to wirelessly communicate data to the remote receiver station. The system also includes a voice-band modem that, upon initiation of the data transfer process. The voice-band modem is configured to receive data for transfer to the remote receiver station, encode the data to form a series of encoded packets, and transmit the encoded packets to the remote receiver station using a first modulation scheme. Thereafter, unless an indication that the series of packets has been received by at the receiving station is provided, the voice-band modem automatically retransmit the encoded packets to the remote receiver station using a second modulation scheme.
