Sulfur-substituted phenylsulfonylureas; processes for their preparation and their use as herbicides and plant growth regulators Compounds of the formula (I) and salts thereof ##STR1## in which R*, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, X, Y, Z, W, n and m are defined as in claim 1, and specifically R* is a formyl equivalent of the formula CHO, --CH.dbd.NR or CH(X.sup.1 R')(X.sup.2 R"), are suitable as herbicides and plant growth regulators. They are prepared analogously to known methods, in some cases using novel intermediate products of the formula (XVII) ##STR2## in which U*.dbd.NH.sub.2, Cl or (substituted) amino.

Compounds of the formula (I) or salts thereof ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 -R.sup.4, W, A, n and m are as defined in claim 1, for example R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are H, (substituted) alkyl, (substituted) alkenyl or alkynyl, (substituted) cycloalkyl, (substituted) aryl or acyl and A is (substituted) pyrimidinyl or triazinyl are suitable as selective sulfonylurea herbicides and plant growth regulators. The invention relates to herbicidal compositions containing at least one compound from the group comprising imazaquin (A1), imazethapyr (A2) and imazethamethapyr (A3, AC 263222) in combination with at least one herbicide selected from the series comprising dicamba (B1), 2,4-D (B2), bromoxynil (B3), pyridate, the cyclohexanedione group and the pyridylsulfonylurea group.
Abstract:
The invention relates to novel intermediates for the preparation of a certain group of novel phenylsulfonylurea herbicides, which herbicides are particularly advantageous for use in crop protection. The novel intermediate compounds are of the formula II ##STR1## and of the formula VI, ##STR2## as defined in the specification and claims. The intermediate compounds may be used to prepare herbicidal and plant growth regulating compounds of the formula I or salts thereof: ##STR3## as defined in the specification. The herbicides so obtained are particularly suitable for selectively controlling weeds.

Compounds of the formula I or their salts ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 to R.sup.6, W, X, a and b are as defined in claim 1 and L is a heterocyclic or isocyclic aromatic radical having 5 to 6 ring atoms, which can be condensed with an aromatic or non-aromatic 5- or 6-membered ring, where the radical can be unsubstituted or substituted, and a, b and c independently of one another are 0 or 1, are suitable as herbicides, plant growth regulators and fungicides. They can be prepared by the processes defined herein, it being possible in some cases to use novel intermediates.

Compounds of the formula I ##STR1## in which n is 0-6, R.sup.1 is alkyl, haloalkyl, cycloalkyl, halocycloalkyl, phenyl or halogenated phenyl,R.sup.2 is Hal, CN, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, haloalkoxy, thioalkyl, R.sup.a SO.sub.2 --, R.sup.a SO.sub.2 O--, R.sup.a SO.sub.2 NR.sup.6, R.sup.a and R.sup.b being alkyl or haloalkyl, and R.sup.3 is H, Hal, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, haloalkoxy or alkylthio, and R.sup.4 is haloalkyl, are suitable as selective herbicides and as growth regulators. To prepare them, a cyclohexanedione can be reacted a) with a 4-oxy-substituted benzoyl chloride and the resulting enol ether can be rearranged, or b) with a benzoyl cyanide. The benzoyl chloride or benzoyl cyanide required can be obtained from correspondingly substituted toluenes via the carboxylic acid.
