Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described contention-based channel access procedures that may enhance efficiency in communications using unlicensed spectrum. A time period may be identified during which base stations perform contention-based downlink channel access procedures for access to a channel in an unlicensed spectrum. The base stations may be coordinated such that different base stations may seek channel access during different time intervals during the time period. Contention-based uplink channel access procedures for UEs may then be modified to favor one or more UEs that are associated with a base station that has won channel access.

Abstract: A sharing of common hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) process space by multiple unlicensed spectrum component carriers is described. Because communication access is not guaranteed over the unlicensed spectrum, a set of component carriers in the unlicensed spectrum is assigned to share a common HARQ process space, such that uplink or downlink data will be transmitted over any one or more of the set of component carriers that clear a clear channel assessment (CCA) check. The receiver then provides a HARQ process response over the same HARQ process space using the grouped component carriers that share that common HARQ process space. Thus, any one or more of the set of component carriers sharing the common HARQ process space may both carry the transmitted data and carry the HARQ process response to the attempted data transmission.

Abstract: Wireless communications systems and methods related to the reduction in a probability of collision for grant-less transmissions from internet of everything (IOE) devices while not increasing search complexity at a base station are disclosed. An IOE device randomly selects a first access resource from a common pool that the base station searches to initiate a transmission. If a metric associated with the data transmission is predicted to exceed a threshold, the IOE device also requests a second access resource from a reserved access pool from the base station, that the base station does not search. The IOE includes the request in the data transmission. The base station and the IOE device switch to the second access resource after the base station identifies an available resource from the reserved access pool and the IOE device completes the data transmission using the second access resource.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A wireless device may divide a data stream into multiple data sub-streams. The wireless device may map the data sub-streams to a set of layers of a multi-layer modulated stream. The wireless device may encode, rate match, modulate, spread and scramble the set of layers before combining them into a combined data stream. The number of layers in the set of layers may be configurable. The wireless device may apply scrambling sequences to the layers. An additional phase rotation or power scaling factor may be applied to each layer. The layers may then be synchronized and combined into a combined data stream. A set of combined data streams may be mapped to multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) layers. The wireless device may precode the MIMO layers, map the MIMO layers to tones, and transmit the combined data streams.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus used in wireless communications. The methods and apparatus establish a codebook for use in sparse code multiple access (SCMA) encoded communications, in particular. The SCMA codebook is configured to set the codebook for at least one layer (i.e., a user) to include a constellation of points having a first grouping of constellation points located at first radial distance from an origin in a complex plane and a second grouping of constellation points located at a second radial distance from the origin. This codebook arrangement provides increased gains at receivers by optimizing the constellation shape to improve the distance between constellation points (i.e., SCMA codebook performance), and in particular more robust performance when encountering amplitude and phase misalignment in uplink (UL) multiple access.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A UE may use different modulation schemes, or different modulators, for a single data stream. The set of modulators may be based on a linear combination of a function of encoded bits to be transmitted. In some cases, the UE may use a different permutation or interleaving of the function of bits with the same linear function to generate a different set of modulators. The UE may use a combination of any one or more of the described techniques for generating a set of modulators. Different modulators may be cyclically repeated over time. The UE may apply a device-specific scrambling sequence and transmit the modulated symbols on an uplink channel. The base station may use matched filters and an element-wise estimator (ESE) to compute log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for each bit of each UE in a received signal.

Abstract: Adaptive pilot signaling is disclosed in which resources allocated to pilot symbols are allowed to vary to more closely match channel conditions. User equipments (UEs) may request different pilot configurations depending on channel conditions. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving a first set of pilot symbols using a first number of resource elements during a first transmission time interval (TTI), and receiving a second set of pilot symbols using a second number of resource elements during a second TTI. In the embodiment, the first TTI and the second TTI include the same number of resource elements, and the first number of resource elements is different than the second number of resource elements.

Abstract: Long term evolution (LTE)/LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) deployments with unlicensed spectrum leverage more efficient LTE communication aspects over unlicensed spectrum, such as over WIFI radio access technology. In order to accommodate such communications, various uplink procedures may be modified in order to handle communications between licensed and unlicensed spectrum with LTE/LTE-A deployments with unlicensed spectrum.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A transmitting device may identify a duration of a slot used for communications with a receiving device. The transmitting device may determine that the communications with the receiving device comprises frequency division duplexing (FDD) communications. The transmitting device may transmit communications to the receiving device during a first portion of the slot, a duration of the first portion being less than the duration of the slot and the duration of the first portion is based at least in part on the determination that the communications comprise FDD communications. The transmitting device may select, based at least in part on the determination that the communications comprise FDD communications and that the communications are transmitted during the first portion of the slot, a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARD) scheme to use during the communications.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to wireless communication systems, and more particularly, to beacons for shared spectrum operation among multiple tiers of users. For example, a method for wireless communication is provided that includes generating, with a second tier wireless communication device of a network operating in a shared spectrum, a beacon that includes a short training field (STF), a long training field (LTF), and a beacon information field, the beacon information field including data about the network; and transmitting, from the second tier wireless communication device of the network, the beacon during a time slot of a sub-frame such that communications over the shared spectrum are coordinated based on the beacon.
