    Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for a User Equipment (UE) with reduced processing capabilities (e.g., Machine Type Communication (MTC) UE) to transmit and receive signaling are provided. The Downlink Control Information (DCI) formats scheduling a transmission of a Physical Uplink Shared CHannel (PUSCH) or a reception of a Physical Downlink Shared CHannel (PDSCH) are designed and have a smaller size than respective DCI formats for conventional UEs. DCI formats scheduling PUSCHs to or PDSCHs for a group of MTC UEs are also designed and can have a same size as DCI formats scheduling PUSCH or PDSCH for an individual MTC UE.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for transmitting Uplink Control Information (UCI) over a Physical Uplink Control CHannel (PUCCH) in a communication system. A method includes acquiring, by a user equipment (UE), from a base station, information for a PUCCH format, the information indicating at least one of a first PUCCH format associated with more than one resource block or a second PUCCH format associated with one resource block; generating, by the UE, UCI to be transmitted; modulating, by the UE, the UCI by using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK); performing, by the UE, an inverse Fourier transform (IFT) operation on the modulated UCI; and transmitting, by the UE, the inverse Fourier transformed UCI on the PUCCH format by using a part of symbols in a slot. The PUCCH format is selected among the first PUCCH format and the second PUCCH format based on a number of at least one bit of the UCI.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for transmitting one or more positive or negative acknowledgement (ACK/NACK) bits in response to data reception in a single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) communication system. The method includes, if the one or more ACK/NACK bits are one bit, applying a first code to a first symbol, if the acknowledgement bit is NACK, and applying a second code to the first symbol, if the acknowledgement bit is ACK; if the one or more ACK/NACK bits are two bits, applying quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation to the first symbol based on a value of the two ACK/NACK bits; if no ACK/NACK bit exists, applying the first code to the first symbol; and transmitting the first symbol and a second symbol in a slot.
