    Abstract: A filter includes a cylindrical filter element having a longitudinal axis, first and second end surfaces, and a plurality of longitudinal pleats. Each of the pleats has a pair of legs with first and second surfaces. The pleats are in a laid-over state in which the first surface of each leg is in intimate contact with the first surface of an adjoining leg and the second surface of each leg is in intimate contact with the second surface of an adjoining leg over substantially the entire height of each leg and over a continuous region extending for at least approximately 50% of the axial length of the filter element. An impervious end cap is connected to the first end surface of the filter element.

    Abstract: A filter is provided which combines a woven wire mesh over a supporting body. The supporting body is typically a metal perforated tube which provides fluid communication between the well bore and the production equipment string. The woven wire mesh acts as a filter to prevent the influx of sand particles, provides openings oriented at various angles relative to its surface, so that some area is available for fluid entry even when particulate matter is lodged on the surface above an opening, provides interior channels that allow fluid to travel from one location on the mesh surface to another location over an opening into the supporting body, and does not provide "straight-through" openings, thus forcing the fluid to make multiple turns to pass through the mesh, thereby dissipating the fluid's energy and increases the mesh's erosion resistance. When particulate matter accumulates on the mesh's surface, the resulting particle cake remains porous, heightening the filter's resistance to plugging.

    Abstract: A coreless filter cartridge, and apparatus for adapting a filter housing to support such coreless filter cartridges. A coreless filter cartridge has an elongate array of filtering material which defines an interior cavity. The array is surrounded by a sheath of perforated paper. The ends of the array and sheath are embedded into polyurethane end-caps. The filter housing is adapted to accept coreless filter cartridges by adding a rigid, perforated standpipe that uses a bushing to fit over a housing fluid egress spud. The coreless filter cartridge is placed over the standpipe and secured in place by a retaining spider or by the housing cover, which exerts bias via a compression spring and compression cup. Gaskets on each end-cap prevent fluid by-pass and a stand-off cup is located near the base of the standpipe to provide a surface against which the end-cap gasket can seat.

    Abstract: Improved well screen has its open area defined by a helically wrapped strip of wire mesh which is supported by a rigid cage-like structure of welded steel longitudinal support rods and helical wrap wires. The design is cost competitive with the simple, and rather fragile, screens made by wrapping a mesh about a perforated pipe while offering the mechanical strength characteristics of wire-wrapped welded screens and a substantially larger open area for flow.
