Helical teeth (60) of a pinion gear (54) meshingly engage teeth of a rack bar (42) and, during rotation of the pinion gear (54), result in an axial force. A shaft (86) connects with the pinion gear (54). Rotation of the shaft (86) effects rotation of the pinion gear (54). An assembly is interposed between the shaft (86) and the housing (12). The assembly comprises a first snap ring (142) that is attached to the shaft (86) and a second snap ring (144) that is attached to the housing (12). Interposed between the first and second snap rings (142 and 144) are only a fluid tight seal (146) for blocking fluid leakage from the housing (12) and a bushing (108) for enabling rotation of the shaft (86) relative to the housing (12) and for engaging the first snap ring (142) to block axial displacement of the pinion gear (54) due to the axial force acting on the pinion gear (54).

The sleeve (110) is press fit against a first recessed surface (92) in the bushing (90) of a first diameter. The sleeve (110) thereby extends between the bushing (90) and the rack (40) and engages the rack (40). The seal member (70) is located adjacent a. second recessed surface (103) in one axial end of the bushing (90). The second recessed surface (103) is of a second diameter greater than the first diameter. The seal member (70) sealingly engages both the rack (40) and the housing (20).

    摘要: A modular, bolt-in, rack and pinion assembly for replacing an existing steering gear box in a motor vehicle. A rack tube, including a pair of elongated slots in its sidewall, houses the rack. The rack tube is mounted to existing holes in the frame of the motor vehicle by means of a plurality of brackets. The rack has a tooth portion and a shaft portion. A pair of studs projects transversely from the shaft portion of the rack, each stud passing through a receptive slot. The studs are mounted to an elongated center link. The vehicle's factory tie rod assemblies are bolted to either end of the center link. A pinion housing is secured over a proximate end of the rack tube, maintaining a pinion gear in threaded engagement with the rack. In a manual embodiment of the invention, an outer end of the pinion is connected directly to the steering wheel shaft. In a powered embodiment, a servo having its own pinion gear is bolted to the pinion housing. An input shaft of the servo is connected to the steering wheel shaft. The servo has high and low pressure supply ports for interconnection to a hydraulic pump, powered by the vehicle's engine. The servo also includes output ports, connected to left hand and right hand stainless steel hard line. The other ends of the hard lines are connected in spaced relation to a distal end of the rack tube. In the powered embodiment, this distal end also houses a power shaft, connected to an end of the rack. A hydraulic plunger, bolted to an outer end of the power shaft, is effective to translate the rack in reciprocating fashion, in response to fluid pressure changes in the hard lines.
