There is provided a glow plug connection apparatus for installing a plurality of glow plug connectors to corresponding glow plugs mounted in a cylinder head in an internal combustion engine while simultaneously preventing engine oil leakage. In accordance with the present invention, the heater provides a core plug having one open axial end and one closed axial end to define a hollow housing. During installation, the closed end of the housing is secured into an engine core bore, such that at least a portion of housing projects inwardly of the bore and is immersed in engine fluid. Independently, a heating element, adaptable to an external power supply, is releasably inserted inside the hollow housing. Heat is therefore conducted directly through the housing directly to the engine fluid and the engine itself. A quick-release retaining member is installed to retain the heating element within the housing while still allowing free rotation of the heating element therein. The free rotation of the heating element allows an electrical connector from an external power source to interconnect with the heating element completely independent of the final orientation of the heating element inside the core plug or the end orientation of the core plug within the engine bore. The present invention therefore functions as both an immersion and a dry heater while simplifying installation and replacement.

A Diesel engine is started as a direct fuel injected engine with ignition accomplished by spraying fuel onto a hot wire electrode that is made hot as part of a spark plug activated by an enhanced ignition system. The fuel injector's normally atomized spray pattern is changed to a concentrated fuel sprayed on to the hot wire electrode resulting in ignition of the sprayed fuel. Upon the engine reaching proper temperature, the injector's restrictor is removed, the spark plug is deactivated, and the engine reverts to Diesel operation.

A rapidly heated glow plug which concentrates its heat at the tip of the protective sheath of the plug so that the tip is the first part to heat to the ignition temperature. The plug is heated by a coil of positive temperature coefficient resistance material such as nickel, and the method of manufacturing the plug results in there being a mass of PTC material at the tip of the protective sheath, with the coil being connected to this mass. The preferred mass is formed by melting several coils of wire within a hole formed in the tip of the sheath to close the hole and expose a large surface area of positive temperature coefficient resistance material at the very tip of the sheath to be heated first.

To permit ready matching of a Diesel engine operating circuit to a glow plug system, an interface-and-control unit (1) is provided which includes a microprocessor (MP) which decodes data words received from an engine control unit (MS). The data words are in the form of serially transmitted bits which define, by time duration of the bits. respectively logic "0" and logic "1" values to provide, inherently, simultaneously data information and synchronizing information. For example, the logic "0" bits may be 1/8 of a predetermined clock period (T) whereas the logic "1" bits may be 1/2 of the clock period (T). The microprocessor, thus, can be easily matched to engines of different types and can carry out, on its own, diagnostic routines and indicator functions under command of respective bits being transmitted thereto. Preferably, glow plug current is provided in pulsed form, the duty cycle of which is controlled by four data bits (D0-D4) transmitted to the microprocessor (MP).

A control for modulating the duty cycle of diesel engine glow plugs has two heat sensitive, normally closed switches each thermally coupled to a respective positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistivity heater in turn thermally coupled to and mounted on a common heat sink. The heat sensitive switches are serially connected to each other, to an ignition switch and to a glow plug relay. The PTC heaters are connected to a point between the heat sensitive switches and the relay and to ground. A third PTC heater is mounted on the heat sink intermediate the first and second heaters and thermally coupled to the heat sink. The third heater is connected to an alternator and serves to cut off power to the glow plugs after a selected after glow stage. The two heat sensitive switches can be selected to open at approximately the same temperature for a random operating mode or at slightly different temperatures for a sequential operating mode. The random operating mode is a redundant high reliability operating mode whereas the sequential operating mode, using slightly different temperatures allows one switch to control the cycling and the second to be a back up safety control. In one preferred embodiment a "wait" lamp is connected between the ignition switch and a double pole relay used to latch the lamp in the deenergized state when the first "off" time of the heat sensitive switches occurs. In a second embodiment the "wait" lamp is connected between the alternator and the coil of the glow plug relay with a diode serially connected to the lamp to preclude alternator current from energizing the lamp.
