Abstract: A system and method for obtaining topologically optimized structure in additive manufacturing. A finite element mesh of a standard shape geometry encompassing desired structure to be optimized with a design objective and orthotropic properties of material arising out of a selected material and selected additive manufacturing process to be used for manufacturing. An iterative topology optimization is carried out wherein the process includes simulation of loading requirements, design constraints and the boundary condition. The performance evaluation process uses a finite element analysis framework to obtain the factor of safety between two consecutive iterations based on the anisotropic properties of the material. The process will achieve a minimal factor of safety and a best suitable build orientation of the design.

Abstract: A method of automatically generating lighting data for a three-dimensional computer generated entity is described. A mesh representation of at least a part of the entity is received and simplified by removing vertices from the mesh. For each vertex in the simplified mesh, a plurality of rays are propagated from the vertex and a cone-shaped region is then defined for the vertex using those of the plurality of rays that do not intersect with the simplified mesh, wherein the cone-shaped region is defined in terms of a vector and an angular parameter. An angular parameter and a vector for each vertex in the received mesh is then calculated by interpolating the angular parameters and vectors for each vertex in the simplified mesh and lighting data is output, the lighting data comprising the angular parameter and vector for each vertex in the received mesh.

Abstract: A tessellation method is described which uses vertex tessellation factors. For a quad patch, the method involves comparing the vertex tessellation factors for each vertex of the quad patch to a threshold value and if none exceed the threshold, the quad is sub-divided into two or four triangles. If at least one of the four vertex tessellation factors exceeds the threshold, a recursive or iterative method is used which considers each vertex of the quad patch and determines how to further tessellate the patch dependent upon the value of the vertex tessellation factor of the selected vertex or dependent upon values of the vertex tessellation factors of the selected vertex and a neighbor vertex. A similar method is described for a triangle patch.

Abstract: One embodiment involves receiving a fine mesh as input, the fine mesh representing a 3-Dimensional (3D) model and comprising fine mesh polygons. The embodiment further involves identifying, based on the fine mesh, near-planar regions represented by a coarse mesh of coarse mesh polygons, at least one of the near-planar regions corresponding to a plurality of the coarse mesh polygons. The embodiment further involves determining a deformation to deform the coarse mesh based on comparing normals between adjacent coarse mesh polygons. The deformation may involve reducing a first angle between coarse mesh polygons adjacent to one another in a same near-planar region. The deformation may additionally or alternatively involve increasing an angle between coarse mesh polygons adjacent to one another in different near-planar regions. The fine mesh can be deformed using the determined deformation.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to techniques for reconstructing an object in three dimensions that is captured in a set of two-dimensional images. The object is reconstructed in three dimensions by computing depth values for edges of the object in the set of two-dimensional images. The set of two-dimensional images may be samples of a light field surrounding the object. The depth values may be computed by exploiting local gradient information in the set of two-dimensional images. After computing the depth values for the edges, depth values between the edges may be determined by identifying types of the edges (e.g., a texture edge, a silhouette edge, or other type of edge). Then, the depth values from the set of two-dimensional images may be aggregated in a three-dimensional space using a voting scheme, allowing the reconstruction of the object in three dimensions.

Abstract: A camera captures an image of a user wearing a head mounted device (HMD) that occludes a portion of the user's face. A three-dimensional (3-D) pose that indicates an orientation and a location of the user's face in a camera coordinate system is determined. A representation of the occluded portion of the user's face is determined based on a 3-D model of the user's face. The representation replaces a portion of the HMD in the image based on the 3-D pose of the user's face in the camera coordinate system. In some cases, the 3-D model of the user's face is selected from 3-D models of the user's face stored in a database that is indexed by eye gaze direction. Mixed reality images can be generated by combining virtual reality images, unoccluded portions of the user's face, and representations of an occluded portion of the user's face.

Abstract: In one embodiment a method of generating a three dimensional model of a subject is disclosed. The method comprises receiving point cloud data for a subject; receiving user inputs indicating a plurality of cubes, and a grouping of the cubes into a plurality of blocks to form a representation of a class of subjects; generating a first mesh comprising a plurality of quadrilaterals by subdividing patches corresponding to faces of blocks of the plurality of blocks; fitting the first mesh to the point cloud data to generate a fitted mesh; iteratively generating further meshes, each comprising a plurality of quadrilaterals by subdividing patches of the fitted mesh from the previous iteration and fitting the further mesh to the point cloud data; and outputting as the three dimensional model of the subject the iteratively generated fitted mesh.
