An outer surface of a primary valley is formed by the primary flights and features a plurality of plateaus. The plateaus span adjacent sections of the primary flights and define shallow levels between deeper levels of the primary valleys. This depth differential contributes to a turbulent mixing action which, along with the primary and secondary valleys, contributes to improve mixing action within a metering section of the screw. The primary flights are interrupted by secondary valleys which are of opposite hand to the primary valleys.

The invention provides an apparatus for mixing and kneading materials comprising a housing defining a mixing and kneading chamber, a jacket member enclosing the mixing and kneading chamber and a mixing and kneading member located in the interior of the mixing and kneading chamber. The mixing and kneading member is driven to a rotating and/or oscillating motion. For supporting the mixing and kneading operation, projection members are provided protruding from the jacket member into the interior of the mixing and kneading chamber. In order to simplify the design of the apparatus and, particularly, to improve the heating and cooling of the mixing and kneading chamber, at least some of the projection members are connected directly to the jacket member, or at least some of the projection members are integrally formed with the jacket member thus constituting a common jacket member/projection member unit.

Continuous mixers of plastic materials are equipped with greased journal bearing assemblies instead of bulky, expensive, pumped circulating-oil lubricating systems, usually involving oil-cooling heat exchangers with circulating water. Such pumped oil systems having traditionally been employed in the past for lubricating journal bearings of the two rotors in such mixers. Novel thermal isolation of the journals for the two rotors separates their bearing assemblies from the severe heat being generated during mixing of plastic materials by continuous rotation of the two rotors within the mixer barrel. Localized cooling provides heat sinks for the drive and driven journals of each rotor. The rotors are shown as three-piece assemblies with drive and driven journals separate from the main rotor body. Beneficial interactions of localized cooling for the drive and driven journals plus thermal isolation of the journals from the severe heat being generated in the mixer barrel advantageously enables the journal bearing assemblies to be lubricated by grease instead of by circulating oil. Each of the journal bearing assemblies shown and described comprises two axially spaced, spherical-type roller bearings each encircling a portion of a journal and each being equipped with a seal housing having a grease fitting. The outer races of these roller bearings are shown and described as mounted in respective end frames which are spaced farther away from the upstream and downstream ends of the mixer barrel than their usual spacing in the past.

The liquid acts as an adhesive agent coating the seeds so that the powder inoculant can be adhered to the seeds at a position downstream of the injection of the liquid at a point where the liquid is fully mixed.

A mixer for food products and the like in commercial quantities comprises a horizontally elongated body with a trough bottom in which rotates one or more horizontal drive shafts carrying an agitator in the form of a helical ribbon or worm of a radius matching that of the trough bottom. The ribbon supports a number of scraper units on it, each scraper unit including a scraper body having a broad face facing toward the trough bottom, the broad face terminating in two opposed relatively sharp edges. The scraper bodies are mounted for rocking movement so that the leading edge will be forced into scraping engagement with the trough bottom and will remain in engagement with the trough bottom even though the trough is wavy or uneven. Either of the edges of the scraper body can be the leading edge, depending on the direction of rotation of the agitator drive shaft. The vessel preferably is formed with a pair of arcuate troughs which have a circumferential arc of 180.degree. from their upper edges and substantially flat lower edge extensions tangent to said trough. Those extensions meet in a horizontal line which in profile is the apex of a cusp. The upper edges of the troughs define the mixer hatch which has a width less than the greater inside width of the vessel. The mixer thus has a useful volume considerably greater than a conventional mixer and minimizes or eliminates throw out of mixture particles against walls not reached by its scrapers.

An apparatus for mixing animal feeds and the like comprises a rotor having two opposing end assemblies connected by a center shaft for rotation within a mixer box. A flighted outer auger is mounted in the terminal portion of each set of corresponding radial arms of each end assembly, parallel to the center shaft. Each outer auger is rotated by drive means within the first hollow rotor end assembly, powered by a high speed drive shaft, and the entire apparatus is rotated by a low speed drive shaft. The drive shafts extend from opposing end assemblies and are coaxial to the center shaft. An optional center auger or optional intermediately spaced augers, parallel to the center shaft, are rotated by drive means within the second end assembly, driven by one or more outer augers.

The mixing apparatus includes an opening at the bottom thereof for the downward discharge of the slurry from the mixing apparatus. The pumping apparatus includes an opening at the top thereof positioned directly below the discharge opening of the mixing apparatus for delivering the slurry to the pump, thereby allowing the regulation and pumping of the slurry to be carried out simultaneously. The slurry is pumped to a gunning nozzle for admixture in a predetermined ratio with refractory aggregate.

Portable apparatus for agitation of animal waste materials collected in a livestock confinement pit which can be inserted into tubes passing through the sidewall of the pit is disclosed. An elongated housing in which is mounted a high speed propulsion screw and a hydraulic drive mechanism is shown. Openings are provided in said housing to allow intake into the enclosure above said propulsion member and an exhaust opening is located in said housing at the lower end of the housing adjacent said propulsion member. A method for intermixing of solid and liquid animal wastes contained within a confinement facility collection pit is described.
