Abstract: Process for preparing a mineral composition based on a mixed solid phase of calcium and magnesium carbonates, comprising a preparation, in an aqueous phase, of a suspension of a solid phase containing at least one calcium compound selected from calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and mixtures thereof and at least one magnesium compound selected from magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, at least partially hydrated dolomite, and mixtures thereof, the weight of said solid phase being between 5% and 15% of the total weight of the suspension, a carbonation of said solid phase in suspension by injecting a gas containing CO2 into said suspension that is heated at a temperature of 55° C. to 90° C., at a flow rate of CO2 of 2.5 to 15 dm3/min/kg of said solid phase of the suspension, with a reduction of the pH of the suspension to a value of less than 9 and with a stabilization of the electrical conductivity of the suspension, the carbonation being stopped as soon as this stabilization of electrical conductivity is observed.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for preparing a precipitated calcium carbonate product comprising the steps of: (a) preparing an aqueous suspension of precipitated calcium carbonate seeds by carbonating a suspension of Ca(OH)2 in the presence of 0.005 to 0.030 moles of Sr, in the form of Sr(OH)2, per mole of Ca(OH)2, (b) dewatering and dispersing the precipitated calcium carbonate seeds prepared in step (a) to obtain an aqueous suspension of precipitated calcium carbonate seeds having a d50 of less than or equal to 0.1 to 0.3 μm and a BET specific surface area of 10 to 30 m2/g, and (c) forming an aqueous suspension of a precipitated calcium carbonate product by carbonating a slurry of Ca(OH)2 in the presence of 0.5 to 5% by dry weight of the precipitated calcium carbonate seeds obtained in step (b), wherein the precipitated calcium carbonate seeds have a d50 that is less than the d50 of the precipitated calcium carbonate product and the precipitated calcium carbonate seeds have an aragonitic polymorph content greater than or equal to the precipitated calcium carbonate product obtained in step (c) characterized in that the dewatering of step (b) is carried out by the use of a tube press.

Abstract: Inorganic particulate compositions containing inorganic particles associated with a copolymer of a hydrophilic monomer and a hydrophobic monomer associated with the inorganic particles are provided. The particulate composition satisfies at least one of the following properties: a BET surface area of the inorganic particles is greater than 8 m2/g, a Hegman value of the inorganic particles is 75 microns or less, and a rate of water loss from the composition upon drying from a moisture level greater than 2% wt % is at least 30% greater than a composition having a corresponding content of a polyacrylate polymer associated with the particles. A method to prepare the composition and formulations for inks, paints, coatings and filled polymeric articles containing the inorganic particulate composition are also provided.

Abstract: A pigment particle composition which comprises calcium carbonate particles and pigment particles, its method of manufacture and its use. According to the present invention, the calcium carbonate particles are carbonated so that they bind to each other, in which case calcium carbonate structures are generated, which comprise pigment particles and which form essentially opaque and stable pigment-calcium carbonate aggregates. It is possible to manufacture the composition by atomizing calcium hydroxide-bearing pigment slurry into a carbon dioxide-bearing gas, in which case the calcium hydroxide is carbonated in order to precipitate the calcium hydroxide particles to be attached to each other and the carbonation is continued until essentially all of the calcium hydroxide has been converted into calcium carbonate. The composition is suitable for use, among others, in paints, coating materials, fillers, polymers and printing inks.

Abstract: Techniques are described for chemical sequestration of carbon dioxide and production of precipitated magnesium carbonate. The process can include contacting carbon dioxide from industrial emissions with water and magnesium-containing particulate material, such as serpentinite, which is thermally pre-treated and has a particle size of at most 75 microns. The process can also include separation of the loaded aqueous stream from the solids, followed by precipitation of magnesium carbonate material that includes carbon and oxygen from industrial emissions and magnesium from serpentinite or chrysotile mining residue, for example.
