Valve device includes a valve chamber containing three spherical members of different hardnesses in stacked relation therein, which produce a limited pulsating air flow that is metered in precise amounts at any given time into the fuel/air path of a gasoline powered internal combustion engine to maintain a narrow band air/fuel ratio over substantially all operating modes. The valve chamber has relatively narrow entry and exit orifices in order to increase the velocity of the pulsations generated therein while at the same time reducing the amount of supplemental air flow through the device. The valve seat also has a conical shape to establish line contact with one of the spherical members to assist in obtaining maximum resonation during operation and provide a more positive seal when the engine is not running. The pulsating air from the valve device is preferably introduced into the carburetor beneath the throttle plate in close proximity below the gas idle jets, providing pressure waves therein that produce turbulence substantially throughout the manifold to assist in remixing and atomizing of the fuel and air, whereby substantially equal air/fuel ratio is supplied to every cylinder for better fuel combustion, with consequent increased power, reduced exhaust pollution, and improved fuel economy.

Partially atomized air/fuel mixture from a carburetor is directed into a dual-chambered apparatus, wherein the air/fuel mixture is further vaporized through the use of heat conducted from recycled exhaust gases of the engine. The vaporized fuel mixture is then directed into the manifold of the engine for combustion.

Valve device and system employing same for providing variations in air flow to the manifold of an internal combustion engine in accordance with the engine vacuum. The valve device includes a plurality of resiliently deformable spherical members which are caused to resonate over substantially the full operating range of the engine, whereby the auxiliary air passing through the valve pulsates creating turbulence in the air flow into the manifold resulting in shock waves which assist in breaking up the fuel into smaller, more uniform particle sizes and maintaining a more constant air/fuel mixture over the full operating range. The valve body is in the shape of a Tee having a hollow-cylindrical portion containing the spherical members and oppositely extending tubular arms in communication therewith. One of the arms is plugged, and the other arm is connected to the carburetor by a hard plastic or metal tube which assists in maintaining the air pulsations during passage of the air therethrough. The PCV line extends from the crankcase in communication with the tube, whereby the pulsating air from the valve device imparts pulsations to the air passing through the PCV line thus to maximize the turbulence of air flowing into the carburetor.

An air induction valve adapted to introduce controlled amounts of additional air to the combustion chamber of an automotive engine when engine vacuum is low, which includes a hollow cylindrical casing having a chamber in communication with the intake manifold of the engine and with ambient air. A pair of perforated partition plates are disposed in parallel spaced apart relationship in the casing, with value means being provided between the partition plates, the valve means being vertically moveable between the plates in response to engine vacuum. Compression springs are provided between the valve means and the partition plates, with the valve means being normally biased open. When the automotive engine is operating under conditions resulting in high engine vacuum, the valve means is displaced to prevent the flow of ambient air through the air induction valve. When the engine is operating under conditions resulting in a low engine vacuum, the valve means is urged to an open position to provide an annular air passage around the valve means and permit the introduction of controlled amounts of ambient air through the air induction valve into the combustion chamber to provide a more efficient air-fuel mixture under such conditions.

A valve controlled by the vacuum in the manifold of an internal combustion engine, has a valve body, the stem of which extends through an opening in the valve seat and down into a liquidfilled chamber, and a spring and a weight loading the valve, the weight being located in a constricted portion of the liquidfilled chamber so that the internal wall of said chamber and the weight define a narrow passage forming a damping device. Disclosed is an embodiment wherein the liquid-filled chamber is tapered in a direction away from the valve body, and the weight is capable of being raised or lowered on the valve stem, whereby the damping action is thus varied by the position of the weight on the stem. The valve is used to reduce the vacuum in the induction manifold of an engine and to supply additional air to the engine.

An eccentrically pivoted control vane is provided in a bore interconnecting a standard carburetor with the intake manifold of an internal-combustion engine. The shaft of the control vane is connected to a pressure sensitive actuator exposed to the differential between atmospheric and induction manifold pressure levels; the angular position of the control vane being, therefore, sensitive to both engine air mass flow and manifold vacuum. Two inlet ports, for diluting air and recirculating exhaust gas, variably obscured by tabs mounted on the control vane, flow through them depending on the angular position of the latter. A secondary air dilution circuit provides a small flow of air at intermediate manifold vacuum conditions. Emission of harmful pollutants is substantially reduced by the admixture of recycled exhaust gas and of diluting air with the engine propellant charge.
