The lower magnetic pole layer, the gap layer, and the upper magnetic pole layer are partly removed using a mask layer, and an insulating layer is deposited on the removed portion to form a main portion and an adjoining portion of a groove. A gap depth Gd is formed in the upper magnetic pole layer, and an back insulating layer is formed on the gap layer in a back region. An upper core layer is formed so as to connect to the upper magnetic pole layer and to partly cover a coil in the magnetic pole end region.

In the thin-film magnetic head of the invention, a pole portion of a bottom pole layer and an insulating layer are formed on a yoke portion of the bottom pole layer. The throat height is defined by the interface between the pole portion and the insulating layer. The pole portion and the insulating layer form a flat surface on a side of a recording gap layer. A top pole layer includes: a pole portion having a width that defines a recording track width; and a yoke portion having a width greater than that of the pole portion and magnetically coupled to the pole portion. The interface between the pole portion and the yoke portion is located on the flat recording gap layer.

    摘要: A preferred embodiment provides a thin film write head having upper and lower pole structures each having pedestal pole tips formed with CoNiFe. The pedestal pole tips may have from about 60% to about 70% Co and from about 10% to about 15% Ni. The upper pole structure of the preferred embodiment has a laminated yoke portion having upper and lower layers. The lower layer is stitched to the pedestal pole tip of the upper pole structure and comprises FeXN, where X is selected from the group consisting of Rh, Ta, Hf, Al, Zr, Ti, Ru, Si, Cr, V, Si, Sr, Nb, Mo, Ru, and Pd. The upper layer comprises NiFe preferably having from about 15% to about 55% of Fe. It is preferred to define the lower layer of the yoke by etching FeXN material using the upper layer as a hard mask. In a preferred method and embodiment, the top surfaces of the conductor coil and the upper pedestal pole tip are planarized with an inorganic capping layer formed thereover to insulate the conductor coil from the yoke and to provide a low apex angle to form the yoke over.

A second magnetic yoke has a magnetic gap depth over which the spacing of a magnetic gap keeps substantially equal toward a rear portion of the second magnetic yoke, starting at the tip of a second magnetic pole and the spacing between a first magnetic yoke and the second magnetic yoke is increased toward the rear portion, starting at a position corresponding to the magnetic gap depth. The second magnetic pole of the second magnetic yoke has in the track width direction a width for recording a signal on a track width of the recording medium. The width keeps constant over a predetermined length toward the rear portion, starting at the second magnetic pole tip and spreads monotonically toward the rear, starting at a position corresponding to the predetermined length. The predetermined length terminating in the spread start position of the width of the second magnetic yoke is set to be shorter than the magnetic gap depth.
