Abstract: An engine piston composed of a head and a body separately formed from the head. The head is of ceramic material and the body is light metal or light alloy. The head and the body are connected against axial movement by interengagement of inclined surfaces on the head and body by rotation of the head relative to the body, and the head and body are then fixed against relative rotation by an anti-turning device, this arrangement preventing development of excessive thermal stress. The piston is of reduced weight, can be mass-produced, and reduces fuel consumption.

Abstract: For an assembly of two bodies wherein one of the bodies has a part-ball portion and the other has a part-ball formed hollow seat of complementary surface, a slot is provided in the body with the hollow portion and the ball formed portion of the other body is mounted into the hollow portion, while a spring washer presses the bodies together when a snap ring having an extension engaging into the slot and being kept in a ring groove is inserted into the hollow portion. The body with the ball formed portion has retaining faces which are engaged by the washer and the washer also has an extension to enter into the slot, whereby the assembly assures, that one of the bodies can pivot relatively to the other body, but that the bodies are prevented from rotational movements relatively to each other.

Abstract: A piston for internal combustion engines, especially for motors of the Diesel type. On purpose to reduce the heat diffusion from the piston crown to the piston portion where are fitted the sealing piston rings, provision is made of an internal circular groove intended to reduce the thickness of the connection portion between the piston crown and the side portion where are fitted the sealing rings, an external cut tangentially formed in the piston side portion substantially at the connection thereof with the piston crown, i.e. above the grooves of the piston rings, being substituted for the circular groove which is interrupted below the regions of the piston crown provided with any recess which would cause the thickness of the connection portion to be too slight.

Abstract: An oil cooled diesel engine piston is designed to restrict heat loss from the combustion chamber through provision of a combustion chamber insert defining a central non-oil-cooled chamber and a surrounding annular insulating air gap. The air gap controls heat flow primarily between the combustion gas exposed wall of the insert and an adjacent coolant exposed wall of the main piston volume.The insert is press fitted into a recess in the main piston body and is positively locked therein by a retaining ring. A seal ring closes expansion clearance provided at the upper edge of the insert against significant gas flow into the insulating air gap. Insulating efficiency of the air gap is maximized by forming the gap with a thickness throughout a major portion of its extent of between about 0.040 and 0.060 inches.Numerous additional features are also disclosed.

Abstract: The disclosure illustrates an insulated composite piston comprising a crown of ceramic or other heat resistant material secured to an aluminum piston body by a bolt of temperature resistant alloy. A low conductivity interface between the crown and the body is provided by a series of stacked discs having low effective thermal conductivity. The relative thermal expansion of the parts is compensated for by bellville washers on the bolt. The above arrangement insulates the crown from the piston body thereby minimizing the temperature gradient across the crown so that its temperature can be maintained as high as necessary to increase efficiency and minimize noxious emissions.

Abstract: The piston head is hollowed for a central coolant cavity and for an outer annular coolant cavity separated by a ridge by which the head is supported on the piston body. An outer shoulder also supports the skirt part of the head on the piston body.
