摘要: A network node selects a “sleep” level based on its current or projected battery capacity. In an embodiment of the invention, sleep levels define the types of communication to which the node in question will be a party. The node in question communicates its selected sleep level to the rest of the network so that the other network nodes can communicate accordingly with the node.

摘要: A diversity scheme for allowing a transmitter/receiver, such as a mobile unit in a mobile telecommunications system, to exchange communication signals with more than one control station, such as a base station or satellite. According to an exemplary embodiment of the diversity scheme, the mobile unit scans for the control channel of a second satellite during idle time slots while communicating with a first satellite during active time slots. Once the mobile unit detects a control channel from a second satellite, the mobile unit stores synchronization information and establishes a communication link with the second satellite if shadowing or other severe fading causes signal quality over a communication link established with a first satellite to fall below a threshold level. The diversity scheme also allows the mobile unit to communicate simultaneously with two satellites, using alternate TDMA frames.

摘要: A method and system for transmitting control information, such as Fast Associated Control Channel (FACCH) information in a digital TDMA communication system. Control information, when required, is transmitted over every other TDMA frame, and speech and data are transmitted over the remaining TDMA frames. Coding protection is reduced during transmission of the control information.

摘要: An apparatus for improving the link margin of a communication link includes a variable rate vocoder which decreases the output bit stream rate it produces so as to reduce the amount of information having to be transmit in the communication link. In one embodiment, the variable rate vocoder includes a plurality of vocoder portions, each of which produces a different bit stream rate. The selector is used for selecting among the output bit streams produced by each vocoder. In another embodiment, a logic device is coupled to the output of the vocoder. The logic device, upon receipt of a control signal, truncates the less important bits. The method for improving link margin includes reducing the vocoder output rate thereby reducing the amount of data being transmit in an communication link. The method also includes using increased error correction coding and transmitting at increased per bit power levels to increase link margin. A device knows to increase the link margin whenever it receives a request to do so, which request is based upon poor signal quality.

摘要: A decoding system processes a received vector r to produce a soft symbol information vector output s including a reliability value for each received code symbol. From the reliability values, clusters of symbols within the received vector r having low reliability are identified and detected. Responsive thereto, the received vector r is permuted to scatter the low reliability symbols within each detected low reliability cluster throughout a given codeword. A decoding generator matrix G is also correspondingly permuted is response to the detection of low reliability clusters of symbols. Utilizing a trellis obtained from the permuted decoding generator matrix G', the permuted received vector r' is then sequentially or otherwise suboptimally decoded.

摘要: The present invention provides a novel Geometric Harmonic Modulation (GHM) method. The GHM method functions in two modes, a preamble mode and a traffic mode. During the preamble mode, n+1 frequencies are each offset by a predetermined phase in a transmit unit and passed through a channel to a receive unit. The set of phases is used as the spreading code in the transmit unit, and also acts as an `address` of intended receive units. The receive unit monitors preamble signals to determine the phases. When it recognizes a set of phases, or `address`, which pertains to itself, the receive unit stores the phases and uses these phases to despread and decode the appended message. After the preamble mode is finished, the GHM modulator enters the traffic mode and requests the message to be transmitted from the message source. A traffic carrier waveform is created by multiplying tones, each having its specific phase. An analog or binary message is encoded by modulating the traffic carder waveform. The receive unit detects a preamble carrier and recovers the particular preamble phases to be used as the despreading `key`. The receive unit then employs the phases in despreading the received signal to recover the transmitted binary message.

摘要: A countermeasure to a partial-band follower jammer for frequency hopping spread spectrum communication systems employs an M-ary orthogonal frequency shift keyed (FSK) signaling system having q frequency channels available for hopping. During each signaling interval, the transmitter and receiver operate in either a conventional or unconventional mode. The conventional mode is selected by the transmitter and the receiver with a pseudorandom probability p.sub.c. In this mode, the transmitter transmits one of r tones within the corresponding hop (i.e., within one of q channels), and log.sub.2 r information bits are conveyed, while the receiver comprises a dehopper followed by noncoherent matched filters. The unconventional mode is selected with probability 1-p.sub.c. In this mode, the transmitter randomly chooses one of the r tones and transmits it in one of r channels within each hop, where the r channels are selected pseudorandomly. In the unconventional mode, log.sub.2 r information bits are transmitted and the receiver comprises a bank of r radiometers.

摘要: A system in which wireless devices form a group in accordance with a peer-to-peer protocol and, at a later time, a device may send an invitation request to trigger the devices tore-form the peer-to-peer group. The invitation request may contain an identifier that is associated with a set of a plurality of devices. Those devices may be related such that they perform a function for which a user would want to use those devices together. The group of devices, for example, may be multimedia devices that receive and present streaming multimedia content or may be human interface devices that collectively act as an interface for a work station incorporating a wireless computing device operated by a user. Requesting that remote devices concurrently re-form a group reduces the time and spectral congestion associated with re-forming the group, particularly when the remote devices may periodically enter a low power state.

摘要: A wireless device that automatically forms a connection to a remote device in accordance with a peer-to-peer protocol. The remote device may be designated as an auto-connect device for the wireless device such that, when the wireless device determines that it is in the vicinity of the auto-connect device, it can re-form a connection to the remote device based on stored information for re-establishing connections among a persistent group of devices, but without any express user input. When a user requests that the wireless device perform a function that involves interaction with an auto-connect device, that function may be performed with the delay associated with forming a connection. Any of multiple techniques may be employed for identifying devices designated as auto-connect devices and for determining when the wireless device and a remote, auto-connect devices are in close proximity.
