This invention relates to ruthenium initiators for the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclic olefins that are inactive at room temperature but activatable at elevated temperature (referred to as (“thermally switchable”). In general, these are compounds of ruthenium metal to which are bonded four or five ligands, in which one ligand is a pyridine ring in which the nitrogen is chelated to the ruthenium, or a five or six membered ring incorporating nitrogen and the ruthenium in which the nitrogen is chelated to the ruthenium.

Provided herein are branched polymers synthesized from: at least one (A1) reactive monomer having a vinyl functional group, or (A2) a hybrid reactive monomer having (a) at least one vinyl functional group and (b) at least one reactive non-vinyl functional group; and at least one: (B1) branching agent having at least two N-vinyl formamide functional groups or (B2) a hybrid branching agent having (a) at least one N-vinyl formamide functional group, and (b) at least one vinyl functional group. The polymers exhibit branching behavior, which in some embodiments lends to lower viscosity, enhanced processability, and/or improved sprayability compared to a corresponding polymer of equal molecular weight synthesized without the second reactive moiety. Formulations with the invention's polymers also are presented.

The present invention provides homopolymers resulting from ROMP of oxanorbornene dicarboxylic anhydride moieties and non-homopolymers resulting from ROMP of norbornene dicarboxylic anhydrides and oxanorbornene dicarboxylic anhydrides with co-monomer moieties. The invention further provides hydrogenated homopolymers resulting from ROMP of oxanorbornene dicarboxylic anhydrides and hydrogenated non-homopolymers resulting from ROMP of norbornene dicarboxylic anhydrides and oxanorbornene dicarboxylic anhydrides with co-monomer moieties. The invention further provides a wide variety of compositions comprising the novel ROMP moieties. Disclosed are novel ultraviolet-absorbing compounds produced by two embodiments. By a first embodiment, the ultraviolet-absorbing compound is derived from at a first reactant being a UV absorber comprising a carbon-nitrogen triple bond and a second reactant having amine functionality. By a second embodiment, the ultraviolet-absorbing compound is derived from a first reactant being a UV absorber comprising amine functionality and a second reactant comprising a carbon-nitrogen triple bond. In both embodiments of the invention, the second reactant may be a small molecule, a monomer, a macromolecule, a biomolecule, or a polymer.The invention's ultraviolet-absorbing compounds are directed toward formulations and applications that serve to protect against UV radiation in any art.
