In a particular aspect, a wireless terminal selects a subset of cells, which include at least one serving cell and at least one non-serving cell. The subset of cells are then evaluated by obtaining a first measurement associated with the at least one serving cell and a second measurement associated with the at least one non-serving cell. A measurement event occurrence, which is based on a comparison between the first measurement and the second measurement, is then monitored. An occurrence of the measurement event triggers a measurement report transmission, which the network then uses to perform handovers. Other disclosed embodiments are directed towards placing a reception band, which include identifying a set of assigned component carriers and placing a reception band within the system bandwidth so that the placement overlaps with at least a portion of the assigned component carriers.

Upon establishing communication with an access point, a mobile device can experience a change in capability, such as by attaching a device, changing a setting in a user interface, and/or the like. Rather than waiting for a reconfiguration command, when changing base stations or switching from idle to active mode, the mobile device can transmit an unsolicited message to the access point indicating the change. The access point can support the change in subsequent uplink communications or deny such support and can accordingly notify the mobile device via radio resource control (RRC) message.

A mobile device can utilize a sleep mode controller that can facilitate selecting and/or switching to a desired sleep mode based in part on predefined sleep mode criteria. The mobile device can employ an analyzer to evaluate information related to explicit signals, implicit signals, and/or the current sleep mode to determine whether a condition is met based in part on the predefined sleep mode criteria such that a transition to a different sleep mode is to be performed. If such a condition is met, the sleep mode controller can facilitate transitioning from the current sleep mode to a different sleep mode to facilitate reducing power consumption by the mobile device.
