A recording/reproducing apparatus is disclosed that is capable of recording an inputted audio signal onto a recording medium. A controlling device is provided which is capable of remote-controlling at least a recording operation of the recording/reproducing apparatus. A microphone is provided on the controlling device for picking up sound waves and converting them into audio signals to be input into the recording/reproducing device, and at least one audio source is provided for generating an audio signal to be input into the recording/reproducing apparatus. A selection switch is further provided for selecting either the microphone or the audio source. The selection switch is provided on the controlling device and a control circuit is utilized for controlling the apparatus to receive the audio signal from either one of the microphone and the audio source.

An electronic still camera device has a camera unit capable of recording and reproducing video and audio signals, and an audio adapter detachably attached to the camera unit and which has operation switches, a microphone, a collected sound amount indicator and a circuit capable of compressing and expanding audio signals. To reduce the number of signal lines between the camera unit and the audio adapter, the audio adapter is automatically set in the audio playback mode when the audio adapter has detected that compressed audio signals are being delivered from the camera unit to the audio adapter. The camera unit has a power supply arranged to superpose a D.C. voltage of a high level or a low level to the compressed audio signal. A power supply switch provided in the audio adapter is capable of selectively supplying the source power from the camera unit to the audio adapter in accordance with the level of the D.C. voltage. In order to enable the user to conduct sound collection, sound cancelling and sound recording at any desired timing, the audio adapter has switches capable of generating a sound collection starting instruction, a sound collection stopping instruction and a sound cancelling instruction, and operation is executed in accordance with these instructions. A collected sound amount indicator is provided for indicating the amount of collected sound in terms of the sound collection time.

A quick-return mirror, normally positioned in the path of the flux of light from the object image, guides the flux of light into the optical viewfinder system. The quick-return mirror is retractable to allow the flux of light to fall onto an image pickup device. A vertical synchronizing signal generator issues a signal for discharging electric charges stored in the image pickup device after the release switch has been turned on and before the quick-return mirror begins its movement out of the light flux path and issues a signal for reading out electric charges which have been stored in the image pickup device while the shutter is open after an exposure operation has been completed. The frequency of scanning for discharging the electric charges is higher than the frequency for scanning for reading out the electric charges subsequent to the photographing operation.

A focus detecting device for a camera utilizing a self-scanning type photoelectric element array composed of a plurality of minute photoelectric elements. The input signal from the photoelectric element array is held by first and second memory circuits at opposite phases from one another with the holding time for the memory circuit corresponding to twice the scanning time for a single minute photoelectric element within the array. Signals representing the difference and sum of the output of the memory circuits are formed and the absolute value of the difference signal is taken. The sum signal is connected as the divisor signal to a divider circuit while the absolute value of the difference is utilized as the dividend. The peak value of the signal thus formed is utilized as a contrast detection signal. This signal is substantially unaffected by vibration of the camera or movement of the object being photographed.

An automatic focus detecting device for a camera in which a contrast signal is produced which is made independent of variations and brightness of the object being viewed and of vibrations of the camera by utilizing an out-of-focus image on an average illumination detecting photoelectric element. The average illumination detecting photoelectric element is disposed in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis of an optical image of the camera. A pulse generator produces an output clock pulse signal having a frequency which is controlled by the output signal from the average illumination detecting photoelectric element. A self-scanning type photoelectric element array is scanned with this variable frequency clock pulse train wherein the frequency of the clock pulses is increased when the brightness of the object being viewed increases to thereby increase the dynamic range of the device.

The wiper of a potentiometer is coupled to the lens so that its operative position is determined by the position of the lens. The wiper is also electrically coupled to respective positive and negative comparison inputs of first and second comparators to the other inputs of which are applied voltages from a second potentiometer which are determinative of the selected range at which focalization may be achieved. The combined outputs of the comparators are coupled to the control input of an analog switch device coupled between the output of a focus detector and the control circuit of a lens positioning motor.

A contrast detection circuit extracts a power spectrum in a high spatial frequency range which becomes a contrast signal of the image. An indication meter indicates the contrast signal directly in the view finder of the camera with the deflection angle indicating a maximum value when proper focus is obtained.
