A diffuser for slowing down a fluid and a method for operating a diffuser is described. A channel of the diffusor has an inlet with a smaller flow cross section than a flow cross section of an outlet and at least one opening for receiving an energizing fluid to be transported selectively into the channel. Pulsations of the impact interface are suppressed effectively at all of the operating points by injecting the energization fluid. Pressures of the fluid moving in the diffusor are measured, and amplitudes and frequencies of the measured pressures are evaluated. Energizing fluid is fed into the diffusor if the amplitudes within a predetermined frequency band exceed a threshold value. The utilization ratio of the inventive diffuser is considerably improved as a result of such a measure.

A vibration damper for rotor housings includes a rubber-elastic damping band (6) that encircles the outer circumference of the rotor housing (4) in a contour fitting manner. A clamping band (7) encircles the damping band (6) and secures the damping band to the housing (4). The clamping band is made of a material having a different modulus of elasticity than the material of the rotor housing, which achieves a detuning of the vibrational system including the rotor housing and the vibration damper as components. Such a detuning reduces the vibrational tendency of the rotor housing. Frictional rubbing between the damping band and the housing surface, and between the damping band and the clamping band effectively damps or dissipates the energy of any vibration that does occur. The clamping band includes a tension adjustment element that is adjustable and releasable so that the clamping band and the entire vibration damper may easily be removed from the housing for carrying out maintenance and inspection procedures.

An active noise control system which minimizes noise output by creating a secondary, cancelling noise field using vibrational inputs. The system includes one or more piezoceramic actuators mounted to the inner surface of the shroud of an aircraft engine. The actuators can be either mounted directly to the shroud or to one or more noise cancelling members which are resiliently mounted the shroud. Transducers are also provided for sensing the noise generated by the engine and producing an error signal corresponding to the level of noise sensed. A controller sends a control signal to the actuators in response to the error signal, thereby causing the actuators to vibrate and generate a noise field which minimizes the total noise emanating from the engine. The piezoceramic actuators can be thin sheets of piezoceramic material or can be in the form of a piezoelectric-driven mechanical lever arrangement.

A gas turbine engine rotor assembly has an inertial damper loosely surrounding a portion of the main rotor shaft. The damper is axially compressed between facing abutment surfaces provided on a nut and bevel gear. The damper has two axially spaced rows of circumferentially spaced slots, with the interrupting web portions of each row being circumferentially staggered with respect to one another. The damper is configured and dimensioned so that the axial force exerted by the damper on the nut and bevel gear, the polar moment of inertia of the damper, and the coefficient of friction between the damper end faces and the abutment surfaces, cooperate to effectively damp the excitation of the fifth-stage blades in response to application of a source of vibrations at a particular frequency to the bevel gear.

Apparatus and process for the selective cancellation of harmonic frequencies of current produced in a multiphase dynamic stabilizer. A plurality of multiphase dynamic stabilizers providing electrical stabilization are interconnected to a multiphase AC electrical network via a coupling transformer. The leakage reactances and turns ratios of the windings of the transformer are such that the phases of selected harmonic frequencies of current produced in each of the stabilizer means are rotated with respect to those of the other stabilizer means with the selected harmonic frequencies being substantially cancelled in each of the stabilizer means. The harmonics are not the cause of subsynchronous resonance. The cancelled harmonic frequencies are dependent upon the number of dynamic stabilizers used. Where a dual stabilizer system is utilized, the coupling transformer is forked wye transformer having the primary windings connected in delta with the principal secondary windings connected in wye and each principal secondary winding having two auxiliary secondary windings connected thereto. By forming the auxiliary secondary windings such that the ratio of the number of turns therein with respect to the principal secondary winding is about the ##EQU1## and the leakage reactance of the principal secondary winding being equal to about twice the common leakage reactance of the auxiliary secondary windings, the phases of the harmonic currents produced in each stabilizer rotates by approximately 30 electrical degrees with respect to one another leading to the substantial cancellation of harmonic currents of each stabilizer characterized by the series 5, 7, 17, 19 . . . n, p where n=5+z; p=7+z; and z=multiples of 12. Addition of shunt capacitors across each of the primary windings creates a static VAR generator having the same harmonic current cancellation attribute.

An aero damping measurement system is provided. The system includes a shroud defining a tunnel, a hub disposed within the tunnel, and a plurality of blades coupled to the hub. The blades may rotate about the hub. A gas pressure probe may have a tip extending to the tunnel to deliver a pressurized burst into the tunnel. An aeromechanical identification system may include a pressurized gas source, a valve in fluid communication with the pressurized gas source, and the gas pressure probe may be in fluid communication with the valve. The valve may control a flow of a pressurized gas from the pressurized gas source into the gas pressure probe. A pressure sensor may be coupled to the gas pressure probe and configured to measure a pressure within the gas pressure probe.
