A valve drive mechanism is provided for an internal combustion engine, especially a four-stroke engine in a power chain saw. The implement housing is spanned by a front handle, the tubular grip of which is adjacent to the cylinder head of the engine and extends from one longitudinal side of the implement to the other longitudinal side thereof. A rocker arm of a valve control is pivotably mounted on the cylinder head between the ends of the rocker arm, with the rocker arm being pivotable about a pivot axis disposed transverse to the rocker arm. Push rods of a control mechanism engage one end of the rocker arm to actuate a poppet valve, on the valve stem of which the other end of the rocker arm acts. To be able to guide the tubular grip close to the center of gravity of the implement, the longitudinal axis of the rocker arm is disposed approximately parallel to the adjacent portion of the tubular grip.

In order to supply a sufficient quantity of lubricating oil to the entire valve operating mechanism, we designed a lubrication device for an overhead valve engine. A first breather passage goes from the valve operating mechanism chamber to the crankcase, passing through the cylinder head and cylinder. The first breather passage opens in the vicinity of the spring retainer for the intake valve on the surface of the cylinder head which faces the valve operating mechanism chamber for the valve operating mechanism. The opening of the first passage and the vicinity of the exhaust valve are connected by a second breather passage. This second passage comprises a groove formed by cutting in the valve operating mechanism chamber surface of the cylinder head, and a tunnel formed between an oil guide wall which goes up from the valve operating mechanism chamber surface of the cylinder head and the peripheral wall of the head. One end of this groove connects to the opening of the first breather passage.

To simplify the assembling process to mount a valve operating mechanism on a cylinder head, one intake valve and one exhaust valve are mounted on the cylinder head symmetrically with respect to the axis of a cylinder shaft. A rocker arm supporting base which supports rocker arms is fixed to the top of the cylinder head. Rocker arm shafts are supported by the base. The central portions of the rocker arms engage with the rocker arm shafts in such a way that the arms are free to swing. Push rods and the intake and exhaust valves are engaged with the ends of the arms. The valve operating mechanism is enclosed in a head cover which is fixed to the top surface of the cylinder head. This engine is distinguished by having the mounting surface for the rocker arm supporting base, on which the rocker shafts are mounted, and the surface on which the head cover sits be virtually coplanar. This makes it possible to machine the two surfaces at the same time. In order to supply a sufficient quantity of lubricating oil to the entire valve operating mechanism, a particularly designed lubrication device is provided.

In the valve structure, inlet valve 3 and exhaust valve 2 are positioned in such a manner that they incline substantially like a "V" in front view to form an acute angle therebetween. Positioned on a first inclined plane U1 are the longitudinal center lines 2a, 4a and 1a of the inlet valve 2, the associated push rod 4 and the associated rocker arm 1, which connects these, respectively. A device for actuating a valve in an internal combustion engine consists of a casing and a cam mechanism including a cam which is rotatably joined to the casing. The cam engages a tappet at a cam/tappet interface and the tappet engages a output link at a tappet/drive link interface. During cam rotation, the cam causes an acceleration to occur in the output link. The drive link moves alternately in either of two directions and is operably disposed within the casing so that the drive link transmits its motion to the valve. The cam is shaped such that in the interval between valve closure and reopening, the acceleration transmitted by the cam, at the cam/tappet interface in normal direction, is substantially constant and is directed away from the cam. During portions of the cycle of operation, the various mechanical links are kept in contact solely by the effect of inertial force thereby reducing the need for additional springs, such as commonly used to maintain contact between the intermediate link or tappet and the cam. A support element or stop engages the output link during valve closure such that the drive link does not engage the tappet at the tappet/drive link interface. This provides more linear acceleration and enhanced lubrication at the tappet/drive link interface during engine operation.

A valve control device and related method of valve control which enhances performance characteristics of an internal combustion engine that utilizes push rods and extends the useful life of the valve control device is provided. The valve control device includes a valve engagement assembly which, in response to movement of the camshaft associated with the engine, interacts with a first valve closure mechanism associated with the valve such that the valve is efficiently opened and closed. The valve engagement assembly includes a rocker arm, which is pivotally connected to the engine and associated with a push rod which is reciprocable in response to movement of the camshaft. Further, a second valve closure mechanism is associated with the push rod for actuating downward movement of the push rod in cooperation, and substantially in unison, with the first valve closure mechanism which is engageable with the rocker arm. Each valve closure mechanism can be a compression spring of predetermined stiffness or elasticity and relative strength. The push rod can be connected to the rocker arm through a ball and socket joint that allows the push rod to rotate and spin during the upward and downward movement of the push rod.

The camshaft also carries a supplementary cam surface, either in the form of an outwardly facing surface of a separate supplementary cam or an inwardly facing surface of a portion of a drive sprocket which is keyed to the shaftlike portion. The supplementary cam surface is adapted to be followed by a spring biased supplementary cam follower and has portions which introduce torque pulses into the camshaft which are synchronous with and consistently directed with respect to the torque pulses that are introduced into the camshaft by the engagement between the valve operating cams and spring biased followers which engage such valve operating cams.

The invention relates to a valve mechanism for controlling a disc valve (1) of an internal combustion engine and comprises a control shaft (2) which is driven by the engine crankshaft, and a push rod (3) which is driven by the control shaft (2) and which for the purpose of transmitting reciprocating movement is connected to one arm (14) of a two-arm rocker (4) which is pivotable about a rocker shaft (15) and the other arm (16) of which rocker transmits these movements to the valve (1). The valve mechanism according to the invention is characterized in that the control shaft (2) is intended to act upon the push rod (3) in both directions of movement thereof; in that the first arm (14) of the rocker (4) extends essentially at right angles to the push rod (3) and the second arm (16) of the rocker extends essentially parallel with the longitudinal geometric axis of the valve (1); and in that a lifting arm (5) is provided for transferring rocker movement to the valve (1). The other arm (16) of the rocker (4) is provided with activating means (18) for coaction with the lifting arm (5), one end of which is pivotally mounted on a lifting arm shaft (19) and the other end of which is provided with means for activating the valve (1). The lifting arm surface (20) which co-acts with the second arm (16) of the rocker (4) is profiled in a manner to achieve the desired pattern of movement of the second end of the lifting arm (5) in response to movement of the rocker (4).
