An apparatus for creating a realistic feel for a simulated gearshift includes a simulated gearshift for a simulated transmission in a simulated vehicle and has a gearshift lever and a simulated shift pattern for simulating the look and movements through an actual shift pattern of an actual gearshift in a actual vehicle. A pivoting mechanical coupling couples the gearshift lever to a housing for allowing the gearshift lever to pivot about at least two axes. A solenoid is coupled to the pivoting mechanism and has a control signal input for receiving a control signal that controls the amount of force applied to the pivoting mechanism to cause resistance to movement by the shift lever along at least one of the axes. A control computer generates to apply an amount of force to the pivoting mechanical coupling which simulates the actual forces which would be felt by said operator in making the corresponding movement of the gearshift in an actual vehicle.

The present invention is directed to a shift control mechanism (10) that may be incorporated in a transmission gear housing (11) to operate in conjunction with the input from a manual shift selecting lever (12). The shift control mechanism (10) has a shift selecting shaft (14) mounted within the transmission gear housing (11) for rotation and axial translation in response to selective manipulation of the shift selecting lever (12). A sleeve (31) is supported from the transmission gear housing (11), and an actuating member (20) is secured to the shift selecting shaft (14) for rotation, and axial translation, with the shift selecting shaft (12). A plurality of synchronizer assemblies (28) are also located within the transmission gear housing (11), and the actuating member (20) individually operates the synchronizer assemblies (28) in response to selected manipulation of the shift selecting lever (12). Alignment guide means (61) are carried on the shift selecting shaft (14) to present locating means (70, 71 and 72). Locator means (60) are presented from the shift sleeve (31) to interact with the locating means (70, 71 and 72) presented from the alignment guide means (60) in order to permit axial translation of the shift selecting shaft (14) only when the shift selecting shaft (14) has been rotated to align the locator means (60) with one of the locating means (70, 71 or 72).

In a gear shifting device for the manual transmission of a motor vehicle with a gearshfit lever, with which the individual gear steps can be engaged over a gearshift rod, the gear shifting motion of the gearshift lever is transferred to the gearshift rod in a nonmechanical manner. The movement of the gearshift lever from the neutral position into the gear shifting position takes place in two steps, the first step acting as a preselection step and the function of the second step being to engage the selected gear step. A locking device permits movement of the gearshift lever from the first into the second step only when the necessary conditions exist for engaging the selected gear step perfectly; that is, when the clutch is disengaged and the gear wheels of the gear steps to be engaged are synchronized.

A gear-shift mechanism for a motor vehicle having a change-speed transmission equipped with a speed-range selection device. The mechanism has a multi-speed gear-shift transmission unit and a range-shift transmission unit. The mechanism incorporates a shift control level whose movement can be transferred via a gear-selector passage and via several gear-shift passages to a gear-shaft which is supported in a rotating manner and can be axially moved inside a housing. The shaft loosely supports gear shifting levers which can be engaged on the shaft and locked in position in a non-revolving manner after an axial movement of the gear-shift shaft caused by the respective gear-selecting operations of the shift-control lever. The arrangement being characterized in that for the purpose of establishing a non-revolving engagement of the gear-shift transmission unit's shifter levers (13, 14) on the shifting shaft (27), the latter is provided with two engaging members (28, 29) arranged at an axial distance to each other and alternatively moved into an operating connection with the shifter levers (13, 14). The arrangement further characterized in that the range-shift transmission unit can be operated by a shifting mechanism (40) which is controlled by an axially moveable shift finger (37). The finger (37) is loosely connected to the shifting shaft (27) in the direction of rotation and is in a fixed connection with the shifting shaft (27) in an axial direction.

An improved gear shift control for use in motor vehicle transmissions of the type wherein gear shifter forks are slidably mounted on associated elongated shifter rails within the housing of the transmission. The gear shift control includes a selector gate mounted within the transmission cover for rotation about a first axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the shifter rails. A shift lever is mounted within the gate for rotation about a second axis, generally perpendicular to and intersecting the first axis, the lower end of the shift lever being selectively engageable with the shifter forks for movement of the shifter forks on their associated shifter rails. Tabs extend laterally from the lower end of the selector gate to selectively engage at least one shifter fork to prevent movement thereof during movement of another shifter fork. Opposed springs are provided to center the selector gate in a neutral position between changes in shifter fork positions.

[Also in Division E2] In a vehicle gear change mechanism in which a hand lever actuates a series of fluid pressure ratio shift control valves a fluid pressure operated member is arranged, upon an establishing movement of the lever, to hold the latter in the gear-engaged position and also, if the pressure in the system falls to a predetermined minimum value, to automatically return the lever to the neutral position. In the system shown air from an engine-driven pump 80 is supplied to a reservoir 83 from which it passes by a line 84 to the shift control valves 55 connected by lines 87 to the gear-box 88, and by a line 89 to a door actuator 90. A second line 85 from the reservoir 83 includes a low pressure protection valve 86 and leads to inlets 44, 45 of valves 37, 38 controlling the lever locking mechanism. The hand lever 13 which is movable along a central gate slot 14 in a cover 12 for gear selection and rotatable about a pivot 18 for establishment has a depending Y-shaped arm 70 for operating the shift control valves 55. In addition it has arms 24 engaging pins 25 on a cross-shaft 22 housing plungers 28, 30, the ends of which, in the neutral setting shown, are spaced from the valves 37, 38 so that the air pressure at inlets 44, 45 is communicated through valve bores 51, 52 to the opposite ends of cross-shaft 22 to balance the latter and hold the lever 13 in position. When the lever is moved to a gear-engaging position, the arm 70 operates the appropriate shift valve 55 and at the same time the plunger 28 or 30 located above the operated shift valve moves against the end of valve 37 or 38 to close the bore 51 or 52 and open the valve to exhaust port 46 or 47, so that the differential air loading then acting on cross-shaft 22 is transmitted by pins 25 to lever 13 which holds the shift valve fully open and is itself held in the gear-engaged position. In the event of the air supply pressure falling to the minimum value, the valve 86 opens to vent line 85 to atmosphere so that the pressure supply to inlets 44, 45 is cut off, whereby loading springs 31, 32 on plungers 28, 30 act to centre cross-shaft 22 and thus automatically return hand lever 13 to the neutral position. In this condition gear may still be engaged by appropriate setting of the lever 13 and holding it in position by hand. To engage reverse gear it is necessary to withdraw a retractable stop (91), Fig. 3 (not shown), by a knob (95) to allow full engaging movement of the valve operating arm 70, the stop being returned automatically by a spring (92) when reverse gear is disengaged. For door operation the hand lever 13 is raised against the action of a spring 101 until the lower end of a sleeve 96 clears a raised baulk lug (95) on the edge of the end gate slot D, Fig. 1 (not shown), before being fully engaged in the slot to operate the appropriate valve 55.
