    摘要: A system for the nonvolatile storage of data, such as a postage meter system, includes a microcomputer coupled to an MNOS type nonvolatile memory and also coupled to an EEPROM type nonvolatile memory, each memory having address lines and data lines. The address lines and data lines of the two nonvolatile memories are coupled to microcomputer ports such that the MNOS memory data lines are always at a high value whenever the EEPROM memory is addressed for the purpose of either writing or reading.The EEPROM nonvolatile memory control terminals and the MNOS nonvolatile memory control terminals are coupled to different ports of the microcomputer. Access to the MNOS nonvolatile memory is achieved by input/output mapping techniques. Access to the EEPROM nonvolatile memory is achieved by memory mapping techniques. In this way, protection is provided against inadvertently accessing the wrong memory or wrong address while executing read/write instructions to a selected memory.

    摘要: In a postal meter adapted to be connected to a source of supply of power for energization, and having structures for printing postage values and a selected data, for displaying a plurality of segments, and for entering data, and having a computer electrically connected to each of the aforesaid structures and programmed for processing data for controlling the operation thereof, and wherein the postal meter includes structure for selecting one of a plurality of dates; there is provided an improvement for reminding an operator of the postal meter to check the selected date. The improvement includes the computer being programmed for causing the display to start displaying at least one unique segment in response to energization of the postal meter, the data entering structure including a depressable key for entering data into the computer, and the computer being programmed for causing the display to stop displaying the at least one segment in response to the depression of the key. In addition, the postal meter preferably includes the computer being programmed for disabling the printing structure in response to the energization of the postal meter, for causing the display to start displaying a postage setting in response to energization of the postal meter, for causing the display to start intermittently flashing the postage setting on display in response to energization of the postal meter, and for causing the display to stop intermittently flashing the postage setting on display in response to the depression of the key.

    摘要: A security system for a postage meter includes two memories, one of which is an electronically programmable READ-ONLY memory having non-volatile storage, while the second memory is a shadow RAM which is a composite memory having a first section composed of a volatile RAM and a second section composed of non-volatile storage. During a power outage, a computer strobes the second memory to transfer data from the volatile section to the non-volatile section. Upon restoration of the power, a transfer circuit which includes a detector of the incoming power directs the transfer of at least a portion of the stored data in each of the memories to the computer for a comparison to determine if any data has been altered by the loss of power.

    摘要: An improved input/output channel for linking a computer control unit for an electronic postal meter to input/output units. The invention includes a converter for converting unit-output electrical signals to non-conductive carrier signals and for converting the non-conductive carrier unit-input signals back to electrical signals. Non-conducting means are used to transmit the signals between the meter and the input/output units so that any attempts to interfere with meter operation will, of necessity, involve physical evidence of tampering, observable to an inspector.

    摘要: An electronic postal meter system is separated into a meter unit and an input/output control unit. The two units are linked by a communications link which preferably uses light transmitting fibers to transmit data and instructions. The meter unit is used to process and store only that data which pertains to the critical accounting functions of the meter or to the control of the printer driven by the electronics control within the meter unit. Less critical functions, such as zip-to-zone conversions, are restricted to the less secure control unit. By restricting the meter unit to highly critical data and by enclosing only the meter unit in a secure housing, the overall security of the meter system is enhanced. Novel failure detect circuitry for a printer setting detector array and a novel event-indicating signal generator circuit are disclosed. The significant routines employed in the operation of the meter system are described.
