Abstract: A method for forming a thermoelement for a thermoelectric cooler is provided. In one embodiment a first substrate having a plurality of pointed tips separated by valleys wherein the substrate is covered by a metallic layer, portions of the metallic layer is covered by an insulator, and other portions of the metallic layer are exposed is formed. The other portions of the metallic layer that are exposed are covered with a thermoelectric material overcoat. A second substrate of thermoelectric material is then fused to the pointed tip side of the first substrate by, for example, heating the back of the first substrate to melt the thermoelectric material overcoat or by passing current through the pointed tips to induce Joule heating and thereby melt the thermoelectric material overcoat.

Abstract: It is an object of the invention to provide a slide member which is excellent in the initial running-in property and can provide an excellent sliding property even under a strict sliding condition and, in particular, a slide member with a solid lubrication coating film which is excellent not only in the friction property but also in the wear resistance under the fluid lubrication, boundary lubrication and dry lubrication conditions. The invention provides a slide member which includes a solid lubrication coating film on a flat-plate-shaped base member, characterized in that, in the surface of the slide member, there are formed a plurality of concentrical grooves extending in the peripheral direction of the slide member surface, and, between the mutually adjoining ones of the grooves, there are formed ridge portions respectively.

Abstract: Methods and associated apparatus are disclosed for use in mounting particles on and de-mounting particles from a substrate having an array of tacky and non-tacky areas. The particles can be either electrically conducting or electrically non-conducting. Selection of electrically conducting particles is preferred. The substrate having an array of tacky and non-tacky areas can either be electrically non-conducting (e.g., a dielectric substrate) or electrically-conducting. The methods involve use of first and second electrode plates with the substrate therebetween, the plates having applied thereto a direct current potential, which potential in preferred embodiments is reversed in polarity for a number N of cycles. Methods and articles are disclosed using an electrically conductive surface adjacent the tacky and non-tacky areas to minimize static buildup on the particles and tacky and non-tacky areas.

Abstract: The method comprises introducing a tip (40) of a solid phase welding tool (126) between adjacent surfaces of a crack (132) formed in an aircraft skin. The tool (126) is then operated to produce a friction stir weld so as to weld the adjacent surfaces together and thereby repair the crack (132). Apparatus for performing the method comprises a base (50) having carriage (55) thereon, the arm (76) being pivotally mounted on the carriage (55) and supporting the friction stir welding tool (126). The position of an arm (76) can be adjusted by a screw (94) which drives the rotating tip (40) of friction stir welding tool (126) into the crack (132) to be repaired. The carriage (55) is then moved along the base (50) to draw the tip (40) along the crack. The apparatus is portable and is particularly useful for repairing a cracked skin on an aircraft.

Abstract: An apparatus for processing printed circuit boards including a system for measuring and controlling solder wave height generally comprises conveyor system for transporting printed circuit board through a number of processing stations. The system for measuring and controlling the wave height of solder includes a sensor which is mounted in close proximity to the interface defined between the surface of the solder wave and the bottom surface of the printed circuit board. The sensor is coupled to a micro-controller and the micro-controller is coupled to a pump motor. The pump motor is coupled to a solder bath which generates the solder wave and is controlled to operate at a predetermined speed to maintain a predetermined solder wave height during the process of wave soldering printed circuit boards. The sensor provides a number voltages to the micro-controller representing the distance between the sensor and the top surface of the solder wave. The voltages are converted into a number of values. The micro-controller includes a comparator which receives the values and compares the values to a predetermined set point to determine whether the solder wave height is too high or to low and the micro-controller further determines whether to respectively decreased or increased the speed of the pump motor.

Abstract: A delivery system a soldering paste to an electronics package includes a pressurized supply of via fill paste and a pressure head attached to the pressurized supply of via fill paste.
