An improved cathode material for nonaqueous electrolyte lithium electrochemical cell is described. The preferred active material is null-phase silver vanadium oxide (Ag2V4O11) coated with a protective layer of a metal oxide, preferably null-phase SVO (Ag1.2V3O1.8). The SVO core provides high capacity and rate capability while the protective coating reduces reactivity of the active particles with electrolyte to improve the long-term stability of the cathode.

The thin battery has an electricity-generating element housed inside a battery outer casing with a pair of electrodes of the electricity-generating element being connected to electrode terminals that extend out from the outer edges of the battery outer casing. The electrode terminals have a base portion located partially with the battery outer casing and a tip portion spaced from the battery outer casing with strength transition point being formed between the base portions and the tip portions. The strength transition points of the electrode terminals are positioned to the outside at some distance away from the outer edge of the battery outer casing.

Positive electrode-active materials for use in lithium-ion and lithium-ion polymer batteries contain quaternary composite oxides of manganese, nickel, cobalt and aluminum where one of the four is present at levels of over 70 mol percent. The composite oxides can be lithiated to form positive electrode-active materials that are stable over at least ten charge/discharge cycles at voltage levels over 4.8 volts, and have capacities of over 200 mAh/g. Methods for producing the materials and electrochemical cells and batteries that include the materials are also provided.

This electrolyte has improved conductivity and provides electrochemical cells with enhanced discharge performance. A most preferred electrolyte comprises 1,2-dimethoxyethane, propylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate and diisopropyl ether.
