Abstract: A method comprising providing, on a substrate, a stack for an energy storage device, the stack comprising a first electrode layer, a second electrode layer, and an electrolyte layer between the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer. A groove is formed at least through the second electrode layer and the electrolyte layer such that the groove is wider in the second electrode layer than in the electrolyte layer. An electrically insulating material is provided in the groove. An electrically conductive material is provided in the groove, on the electrically insulating material.

Abstract: A flexible battery is disclosed in the present invention. One of a first active material layer, an intermediate layer, a second active material layer, a first interface located between the first active material layer and the intermediate layer, and a second interface located between the second active material layer and the intermediate layer includes a first adhesive. The first adhesive includes at least one first linear polymer and at least one first crystallization inhibitor. Therefore, the active material layers, the intermediate layer or the interfaces have sufficient adhesion and flexibility. The electrochemical reaction element would not easy to be cracked or separated after bending, and the ionic and electrical conductivities of the battery is greatly improved.

Abstract: Secondary batteries and methods of manufacture thereof are provided. A secondary battery can comprise an offset between electrode and counter-electrode layers in a unit cell. Secondary batteries can be prepared by removing a population of negative electrode subunits from a negative electrode sheet, the negative electrode sheet comprising a negative electrode sheet edge margin and at least one negative electrode sheet weakened region that is internal to the negative electrode sheet edge margin, removing a population of separator layer subunits from a separator sheet, and removing a population of positive electrode subunits from a positive electrode sheet, the positive electrode sheet comprising a positive electrode edge margin and at least one positive electrode sheet weakened region that is internal to the positive electrode sheet edge margin, and stacking members of the negative electrode subunit population, the separator layer subunit population and the positive electrode subunit population.

Abstract: A Li-ion battery cell includes cathode and anode materials, a separator, and an electrolyte including a mixture of a polyethylene oxide and an oxide of formula LivLasZnOn. A method of forming the cell includes the following successive cycling steps: (a) at least two successive charge and discharge cycles of the cell at a first cycling rate C/x, the charge/discharge steps being limited in time to x/2; (b) at least two successive charge and discharge cycles of the cell at a second charging rate C/y, different from the first cycling rate, where y is lower than x, the charge/discharge steps being limited in time to y/2; and (c) at least two successive charge and discharge cycles of the cell at a third cycling rate C/z different from the first and second charging rates, where z is lower than x and y, the charge/discharge steps being limited in time to z/2.

Abstract: Electrochemical cells and methods of making electrochemical cells are described herein. In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a multi-layer sheet for encasing an electrode material for an electrochemical cell. The multi-layer sheet including an outer layer, an intermediate layer that includes a conductive substrate, and an inner layer disposed on a portion of the conductive substrate. The intermediate layer is disposed between the outer layer and the inner layer. The inner layer defines an opening through which a conductive region of the intermediate layer is exposed such that the electrode material can be electrically connected to the conductive region. Thus, the intermediate layer can serve as a current collector for the electrochemical cell.

Abstract: An object is to improve the characteristics of a power storage device such as a charging and discharging rate or a charge and discharge capacity. The grain size of particles of a positive electrode active material is nano-sized so that a surface area per unit mass of the active material is increased. Specifically, the grain size is set to greater than or equal to 10 nm and less than or equal to 100 nm, preferably greater than or equal to 20 nm and less than or equal to 60 nm. Alternatively, the surface area per unit mass is set to 10 m2/g or more, preferably 20 m2/g or more, further, the crystallinity of the active material is increased by setting an XRD half width to greater than or equal to 0.12° and less than 0.17°, preferably greater than or equal to 0.13° and less than 0.16°.

Each member of the electrode population comprises an electrode active material layer and an electrode current conductor layer, and each member of the electrode population has a bottom, a top, a length LE, a width WE and a height HE, wherein the ratio of LE to each of WE and HE is at least 5:1, the ratio of HE to WE is between 0.4:1 and 1000:1, and the electrode current collector layer of each member of the electrode population has a length LC that is measured in the same direction as and is at least 50% of length LE.

Abstract: A secondary battery including an electrode assembly including a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and an electrolyte encapsulated in an exterior body.
