摘要:
The present invention relates to a brine mining process. The process incorporates a forward osmosis step wherein at least a portion of at least one process stream is provided to at least one forward osmosis unit. The process thus allows for the use of multiple sources, and qualities, of water, which, in turn, can reduce the reliance on natural water sources. Longevity of the mining, and any downstream, process equipment may be enhanced. At least a portion of the production stream may also be fed to a downstream process, such as a chlor-alkali process.

A method for protection against overloads in mercury cathode electrolytic cells, consisting in detecting, in an indirect way, the average currents of the two semicells forming the cell to be protected by measuring the average of the anode potentials of the two semicells with respect to the two average potentials of the two semibottoms of the next cell, via a bridge circuit connecting said two average potentials of the semicells with said two average potentials of the semibottoms of the next cell, and in obtaining, with a balanced cell, two signals of bridge unbalance, by connecting in said bridge two double potentiometers having only one control, such as to actuate alarm devices when, because of overloaded anodes or of current unbalances, the value of one of said signals is zero. A device for carrying out this method consists of bridge electric circuits, with a double potentiometer for working out signals, as well as contact-connected alarm thresholds for setting in action alarm and/or anode-lifting devices.
摘要:
An electrolysis process for chlorine-caustic production using a mobile film of mercury as the cathode, and a cation permeable membrane to separate the electrodes, the film of mercury continuously flowing across one side of the membrane. The membrane is impervious to the passage of the mercury therethrough for preventing short circuits between the mercury cathode and the anode, the anode being preferably a grid. The membrane is disposed against the anode to avoid breakage of the membrane due to the pressure of the film of mercury. Preferably, the membrane is positioned in a vertical arrangement and the film of mercury flows in an upward direction across the membrane. Anolyte and cathode sections of the electrolytic cell may be stacked in a matching alternating side-by-side arrangement with each of the sections being bifrontal.
摘要:
An improved method and apparatus for adjusting the space between an adjustable anode and a cathode in an electrolytic cell wherein current measurements and voltage measurements are obtained for conductors to the anode sets and compared with predetermined standards for the same conductors and anode sets. Measurement of deviation from the predetermined standards are used to determine the direction of anode adjustment. A digital computer operably connected to motor drive means adapted to raise or lower anode sets upon appropriate electric signals from the computer is a preferred embodiment of this invention.

A deflected flow inlet system for use in mercury-type electrolytic cells to help prevent inlet flow from jumping the inlet channel and splattering the mercury cathode onto the anodes.
摘要:
Disclosed is a method of operating an electrolytic cell of the flowing mercury amalgam cathode type. According to the disclosed process, fortified alkali metal chloride brine is fed to the cell while an electrical current is passed through the cell. Depleted brine, diminished in alkali metal chloride content and enhanced in mercury content, is recovered from the cell. The depleted brine is dechlorinated and then refortified with alkali metal chloride. Thereafter, the refortified brine is treated to precipitate sulfate and alkaline earth metal contaminates as well as mercury. The purified, refortified brine is then introduced to a flowing mercury amalgam cathode electrolytic cell. The mercury recovery process is characterized by adding an alkaline hypochlorite solution to the precipitated impurities in order to form a soluble mercury salt, separating the soluble mercury salt from the precipitate at an alkaline pH, and then acidifying the solution of the soluble mercury salt. Thereafter, the mercury salt solution is electrolyzed between an anode and a cathode in order to evolve metallic mercury at the cathode.

In the process of producing chlorine and caustic soda employing mercury amalgam electrolytic cells, mercury losses occur in both solid and liquid plant waste streams. This invention provides for an integrated system in which mercury is extracted from plant waste streams, the waste streams are discharged, and the mercury recovered by electro-reduction in the plant electrolytic cells.
摘要:
Alkali metal chlorides, e.g. brine, are electrolized in the presence of substantially horizontal anodes provided on the underside with channel- or groove-like recesses. The anodes and/or the course of the channel- or groove-like recesses in the anodes are positioned to define spaced apart regions between the anodes so as to provide for an outflow of chlorine from the space between the electrodes and for an inflow of brine into this space.
