A seal plug for conduits is disclosed having a plug core including at least one radially-expansible seal member for sealing the conduit in which it is disposed, while permitting passage of cables or the like therethrough. Until required for the cable or cables, the passages in the seal plug are closed by removable pin inserts, retainer means being provided to hold the inserts in place. The plug includes longitudinal compression means to bring the seal member into sealing contact with the conduit wall. Each passage may open to the circumference of the respective seal member via slits to permit sideways insertion of the cable therein.

A hermetic electrical terminal construction adapted for connection to the outer housing of a hermetic motor compressor unit so that current may be carried to the compressor motor from an external source. The terminal comprises a body member welded or otherwise secured to the compressor outer housing and a plurality of conductor pins secured to and extending through the body member. Each of the conductor pins, which may be made of stainless steel, copper or other suitable material, comprises a first segment disposed within the housing, a second segment disposed outside the housing, and an intermediate segment connecting the first and second segments, the intermediate segment being disposed primarily within the body member. Electrical insulating and sealing material, such as glass or epoxy potting, surrounds the pin intermediate segment and forms a hermetic seal between the pin intermediate segment and the body member. The intermediate segment has a larger transverse cross-sectional area than the segment disposed outside the compressor housing with a concomitant larger current carrying capacity so that under irreversible overcurrent conditions, the normal diameter external segment will melt thereby interrupting the supply of current. Since the intermediate portion is of a greater current carrying capacity, it will remain intact and the seal between the potting material and pin will not be disturbed so that the pressurized refrigerant within the compressor housing will not be discharged.

A terminal is provided for introducing signals from an electrical terminal pin in a heart pacemaker to a terminal lead introduced into a patient's body. The terminal pin is disposed in a lid of the heart pacemaker so that the terminal pin is insulated from the lid. Means are also provided for introducing the signals on the terminal pin to the terminal lead without subjecting the pin to undue stresses.The terminal includes a hollow, electrically conductive ferrule disposed in concentric relationship with the terminal pin and attached to the lid. An electrical filter is disposed in the ferrule and is maintained in fixed relationship to the ferrule and the terminal. Insulating means are provided for bonding the ferrule and the terminal.An elongated sleeve is disposed on the ferrule and an insulating material is disposed between the terminal pin and the sleeve and is hermetically sealed to the terminal pin and the sleeve. The sleeve supports an electrically conductive catheter block which fits over the electrical terminal pin and communicates electrically with the terminal pin. The catheter block also holds the terminal lead in fixed position and communicates electrically with the lead and directs the lead into the body of the patient.A method is also provided for assembling the terminal. The method provides for the assembly of the terminal in a minimum number of steps and in a manner to insure the proper assembly of the terminal without breaking any components in the terminal.

There is disclosed an instrument probe assembly having a positive seal to prevent invasion of process fluids into the cavity of the assembly body. The instrument probe assembly comprises an elongated probe member which projects from a through passageway of the assembly body. The latter has attachment menas, typically pipe threads, at one end to permit it to be seated in an aperture of a process vessel, typically a pressure vessel. The elongated probe which projects from the assembly body into the vessel is commonly used as a capacitance sensing probe to determine the level of liquids or granular solids within the vessel. The probe assembly of this invention includes a sleeve projection from the inboard face of the assembly body, surrounding the projecting elongated probe member and a laminated sleeve formed of an inner sleeve of thermoplastic resin and an outer sleeve of heat shrinkable plastic which overlies the annular joint between the assembly body sleeve and the probe member and which is thermally applied, effectively sealing this annular joint against invasion of process fluids into the assembly body.

A bundle of individual measuring lines extends through the cover of a reactor pressure vessel, the bundle extending into a tubular mounting having a multiplicity of extending tubes through which the individual lines of the bundle extend. In each tube the line is passed through a sleeve slidably inserted in the tube and having an inner portion soldered to the line and an outer portion welded to the tube's outer end. The length of the sleeve and tube between the soldered and welded joints is made sufficient to prevent the heat of welding from effecting the soldered joints. Each line can be removed from its tube by cutting away the welded joint and removing the line with its sleeve from the tube. The line can be reinstalled by returning the sleeve to its tube and making a new welded joint with the sleeve spacing its soldered connection with the line far enough to prevent the welding heat from affecting the soldered joint between the sleeve and the line.
