A solid state circuit interruption arrangement monitors a current path to provide protection to both a load and a solid state switch. The arrangement includes an energy absorber for absorbing energy from the current path in response to the solid state switch interrupting the current path, and a control circuit for periodically generating the interrupt signal to interrupt the current path for prescribed intervals and to control the current supplied to the load between a maximum current level and a minimum current level.

An auto-recloser for a power line has a high voltage closing coil (12) for closing the main contact (14) in the power line, the closing coil being energized via a non-latching switching (18) in turn controlled by a low voltage closing coil (20). A time closing pulse is applied to the low voltage coil (20) to close switch (18) for a very short time period. A coil protection (24) monitors the status of the main contants (14) and if these have not closed after a preselected time period of typically 100 ms then the protection circuit opens a normally closed switch in series with the low voltage coil (20) to prevent further closing pulses being applied in further attempts to close the main contacts (14).

A method for reclosing a temporarily opened circuit breaker in a manner which assures that generation of unwanted overvoltage stresses is avoided during the reclosure process. An oscillating line voltage typically develops in a shunt-compensated line after a circuit breaker connecting the line to a voltage source is opened. When the circuit breaker is reclosed the source voltage and the oscillating voltages must be properly phased to avoid the overstressing problem. In operation, the polarities of the feed voltage and the oscillating line voltage are detected and the instant when the circuit breaker may be reclosed is calculated. The periods T.sub.L and T.sub.S of the line voltage and the feed voltage are measured. Also measured is the time .DELTA.T which elapses from a zero crossing of the line voltage waveform to a subsequent zero crossing of the feed voltage waveform having the same phase angle as that of the line voltage zero crossing. The circuit breaker is reclosed upon satisfying the relationship:.vertline.nT.sub.L -(.DELTA.T+mT.sub.S).vertline..ltoreq.(T.sub.L -T.sub.S)/2where m, n are natural numbers which are sequentially entered in the above equation.

Protection of induction motors and generators is provided to allow rapid reclosure of the power supply or fast transfer from one power supply to an alternate supply. A switching sequence is disclosed in which motor stator windings are short circuited immediately following interruption of the supply voltage. Said short circuit quickly discharges to a safe value the energy stored in the rotor of the induction machine, allowing the short circuit to be removed and safe reconnection to the power supply to be accomplished without further delay.

An adjustable speed propulsion engine for a boat also drives an electric generator which supplies electric power to an electric load circuit on the boat. A solid state electronic control circuit senses when generator voltage departs from a voltage "window" or range defined by preselected low and high voltages (as a result of a departure in engine speed from a cruise speed range to some lower or high speed) and operates a contactor to disconnect the generator from the load circuit to prevent low or high voltage damage to electrical equipment on board. The electronic control circuit operates the contactor to reconnect the generator to the load circuit only when generator voltage rises to a preselected initial turn-on voltage which is above the preselected low voltage but below the normal rated voltage of the generator. The electronic control circuit includes time delay means to prevent a transient low voltage condition ("flicker") from causing disconnection of the generator from the load circuit.

A process for the protection of electrical systems upon return of power after power interruptions, through the immediate disconnection of secondary consuming units by an audio-frequency control receiver, and the subsequent reconnection thereof in timed sequence. The audio-frequency control receivers have, in addition to a normal control path, a second path, through which, upon return of the voltage, the switch relay for secondary consuming units is disconnected upon reaching 2/3 of the system voltage. The process may be implemented through the use of a two-state D.C. relay, which is controlled by a secondary path including a cold lead to the system voltage. The process may alternatively be implemented through the use of a two-state A.C. relay which is controlled through a half-wave secondary path including a capacitor/resistor parallel circuit.

A self-powered solid state overload relay having current transformers energized by current to a motor to be protected. The transformer has secondary windings connected through diodes to charge a capacitor in a circuit which senses the magnitude of motor current and capacitors in a trip-reset circuit which causes the circuit to be interrupted when the motor current exceeds a pre-programmed value. The diodes in capacitor charging circuits are poled so that the capacitor in the sensing circuit and the capacitor trip-reset circuit are charged by opposite polarity rectified half wave current pulses. The cores of the transformers are sized and impedances are included in the charging circuits to cause the capacitors in the trip-reset circuit to be fully charged before the capacitor in the sensing circuit is charged to a level which would cause the relay to operate to interrupt the motor circuit and the cores of the transformers to saturate in one direction on their associated hysteresis loops when the capacitors in the trip-reset circuit are being charged and in the opposite direction after the capacitor in the sensing circuit is charged.

A short circuit detector is provided for a compact power supply system in which a plurality of power supplies may be operated in parallel. The detector senses when a voltage drop in a bus indicates a possible short and then energizes solid state devices to turn the system off for a prescribed period of time. After the prescribed period of time has passed, the system will attempt to restart. If the ground has been cleared, system operation will be restored. If not, the system will again be shut down for the prescribed period.

The present disclosure describes electrical circuit means for providing an automatic power restart for unattended electrical equipment, such as computer cabinets, after an AC power failure and subsequent power restoration. The restart function is performed without interfering with the normal cabinet power sequencing during attended operation or maintenance. The circuit which utilizes a latch-in type relay to "remember" the last manually selected power control setting has general utility in new installations, as well as being adaptable to existing cabinet power systems.
