The servomechanisms receive control signals (54 and 56) generated in accordance with respective control functions, each of which includes a respective constituent function of the difference between a commanded tension-arm position and a measured tension-arm position. In a position of the tension arm that prevails at the beginning of tape threading the constituent of the tension-arm control function that depends on this arm-position error is a relatively large contribution and gradually decreases to zero as the tension arm moves to the position that it assumes for normal recording and playback. During the same time, the the constituent of the reel-control function that depends on arm-position error begins at zero and gradually increases. Such a gradual transfer of position-error-based control suppresses tape-tension transients that would otherwise result.

An improved, shielded magnetic core structure is disclosed that is particularly well suited for use in magnetic read and write heads adapted for narrow track, short wavelength magnetic recording systems, and for transformers of high performance, wide band application. The improved magnetic cores use novel field confinement structures to reduce or eliminate leakage magnetic paths which normally do not link the head gap or do not link the transformer windings. This shielding arrangement substantially improves the performance of such devices, as compared to conventional, unshielded heads and transformers. Embodiments involving toroidal cores, thin film heads, and MR heads are disclosed, along with high performance, wide band transformer structures.

A pipelined Viterbi decoder includes a plurality of circuit stages and a synchronous clocking arrangement for controlling the operations of the circuits within each stage. Specifically, an input stage converts multi-level input signals into streams of even and odd digital data samples. A parallel-precomputation stage adaptively establishes a threshold range for each sample, while a sequence detection stage designates one of the multiple levels for that sample and then determines the validity of that designation. Validity is determined in accordance with the sequence property of alternate samples in multi-level coding. Violations of the sequence property are corrected by a sequence correction stage so that valid, coded data and clock signals are provided at the outputs of the decoder.

A helical type tape recording and reproducing system records blocks of user data of predetermined size by reformatting the user data blocks into physical blocks that are recorded on tape, with the physical blocks being recorded as double frames. Each double frame is recorded on a set of successive helical tracks, preferably 32 tracks. Each double frame has system format data interleaved with the user data block data which identifies the double frame as being of a particular type. The present invention is directed to the types of double frames that are used to begin a recording, particularly an append recording which involves recording by the system at a previously recorded tape which may have been recorded by a different system, as well as the types of double frame that are used to end a recording.

A control winding is associated with each core pole. A control current applied to each control winding selectively saturates a portion of each core pole facing a record medium. Each saturated face portion defines an adjacent unsaturated highly permeable face portion. The highly permeable face portions of each core pole overlap across the gap to define a transducing zone. The information signal and control windings are arranged relative to one another to obtain information signal and control flux paths extending perpendicular to one another.

An apparatus for controlling conditions in response to an operator input, the apparatus including a rotary knob coupled to the shaft of the rotor of a stepper motor having first and second stator windings, in quadrature, with each winding being center tap grounded to provide first and second winding portions for each winding. One pair of first winding portions are used for providing pulse inputs to a microprocessor on rotation of the knob, in either direction, via a pulse control system, with the microprocessor providing command signals to a braking control system, which includes a direct current power control source, which may be either a voltage or current control source. The power control source, in turn is in circuit relation with the pair of second winding portions. On command of the processor, a force or torque is applied to the rotor, by means of energization of the other pair of winding portions, with the force being in opposition to the direction of rotation of the knob, the force being in proportion to the applied power. Under control of a microprocessor, the force may be intermittently applied to simulate a mechanical detent arrangement, or a constant force for braking, either of which provides tactile feedback to the operator.

An apparatus and method are provided for controlling the level of an audio output signal which has been recorded and is played back from a magnetic tape at a low or zero tape speed, such as utilized in jog mode or variable speed playback during editing. A gain control signal is provided to eliminate a disturbing repetitive audio signal which accompanies stop motion playback and to reduce that signal level at low tape speed playback. The gain control signal is made dependent on the magnitude of tape speed, and it is applied to adjust the audio output gain of the playback channel.
