Abstract: A system of monitoring operation for a conveyor belt installation includes a conveyor belt having steel or other relatively magnetically permeable reinforcing material, the system including, in proximity to the conveyor belt, a magnetic field generator, and a sensor unit at a position downstream from the field generator, the sensor unit sensing the magnetic field emanating from the passing conveyor belt, and a monitoring unit to receive data related to the magnetic field properties sensed by the sensor unit during a plurality of passages of each part of the length of the conveyor belt past the sensor unit, the monitoring unit incorporating comparison elements to compare a received set of data with an earlier received set of data, and output elements to provide an output signal representative of reinforcement damage or deterioration when subsequently received data has departed from earlier received data by more than a prescribed extent.

Abstract: For the manufacture of a heavy duty elastomeric having a stack of elastomeric and metal reinforcing layers interleaved with one another use is made of a mould sufficiently large to allow an elastomeric cover layer to be formed and cured simultaneous with compression and cure of the elastomeric layers. Relative transverse movement of the metal layers during compression is restricted by spacers which occupy in the mould a small part of the space that in the finished product is to be occupied by the cover layer. Subsequent to moulding and cure the spacers are removed and the resulting spaces in the part formed cover are filled.

Abstract: Flexible polyurethane foams are used for a wide variety of applications including upholstery and bedding. Unfortunately polyurethane foams are inherently flammable. The invention overcomes this problem by using expandable graphite in the polyurethane foam-forming reaction mixture to improve the burning characteristics of the final foam. Expandable graphite is graphite containing one or more exfoliating agents so that considerable expansion will occur at high temperatures.
