The composition is substantially free of hexavolent chromium and provides a black finish, on zinc or zinc alloy coatings. The composition includes trivalent chromium ions, phosphorous anions, anions selected from the group consisting of sulfate ions, nitrate ions and combinations thereof, at least one of a transition metal or metalloid from Groups III, IVa, Va or VIII, and an organic chelate selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acids, polycarboxylic acids and combinations thereof.

A chrome-free conversion coating composition for use over zinc-plated metal comprises a combination of a transition metal oxide, and a polyhydroxy aromatic to provide a coating that eliminates environmental concerns regarding chromium disposal. Aluminum chlorohydrol is also included in the composition to provide an aesthetically pleasing blue appearance. The conversion coating composition is combined with water to form a bath. Zinc plated metal is immersed in the bath to apply the coating.

The invention provides an aqueous zinc-nickel alloy electroplating composition particularly useful in an electroplating method for depositing a zinc-nickel alloy layer on a substrate, wherein the deposited layer exhibits uniform nickel concentration and good aesthetics across a broad range of current densities. The electroplating composition comprises an electrolyte composition and an organic composition. In one embodiment, the electrolyte composition comprises a zinc ion source, a nickel ion source, a pH buffering agent and at least one additional salt, and the organic composition comprises a Class I nickel brightener, a Class II nickel brightener, an aromatic carboxylic acid, an aldehyde or ketone compound, and a non-ionic or anionic surfactant. The electroplating composition is particularly free of chelators and free ammonium-producing agents.
