摘要: A survival vest having a broad central strip forming the stem of a "Y" covering the back of the wearer, with left and right front strips (forming the twin forks of the "Y") dividing from the stem of the "Y" at the back of the neck and running down along each of the front shoulder/armpit areas of the wearer. The tips of each fork of the "Y" expand to form large, pockets which cover the front of the chest, abdomen, and (partially) the sides of the wearer. The twin large pockets are formed using a heavy-duty zipper, sewn around the periphery of each pocket area and are completely detachable. A webbing harness reinforces the vest across the inside of the twin pockets and along the forks of the "Y"-shape of the vest, from the base of the pockets to the point at which they join to form the collar of the vest, and along the outer edges of the stem of the "Y" which forms the back of the vest. A number of hook-and-loop fasteners (such as Velcro.RTM.) in the form of strips or patches are used to attach the survival pouches. The loop portion of the fasteners are sewn into the inner surface of each large pocket area (next to the wearers body), and the hook portion of the fasteners are sewn into the back surface of the smaller survival equipment pouches.

摘要: The present invention is an environmentally sealed storage and deployment system for inflatable aircraft escape slides which is comprised of an environmentally sealed vacuum bag and an inflatable escape slide. Environmentally sealing the slide protects the slide fabric and components from degradation due to moisture, oxygen, ozone, tobacco smoke, and other deleterious agents. By protecting the slide from degradation in this manner, the time period between routine inspections may be extended. The force generated by the opening of the aircraft door tears open the environmentally sealed bag, initiating the deployment of the inflatable escape slide. The sealed vacuum bag is equipped with air-tight disconnect fittings that make it unnecessary to repack the slide after the changing of the CO.sub.2 cylinder or the slide light batteries.

摘要: The present invention is a tubular structure which inflates upon side or oblique vehicle impact to protect the occupants of a vehicle such as an automobile. The structure is mounted in its undeployed state along the periphery of the vehicle's side pillars and roof rail. The primary component of the present invention is a braided tube linked to a gas generator. When a side impact is detected, the gas generator is ignited, inflating the braided tube. As the braided tube inflates, the diameter of the tube increases and its length decreases. The tube then pulls out of its storage location and forms a taut, semi-rigid structural member across the vehicle's side window.

摘要: A personal ballistic protective device having a first layer comprised of ballistic material and a second layer comprised of buoyant material. The second layer preferably has a density sufficient to counteract a density of at least the first layer of ballistic material such that the first layer and the second layer have a combined density substantially equal to or less than the density of water. A method of counteracting negative buoyancy in a personal protective device is also disclosed.

摘要: A seat restraint system whose torso belt includes an inflatable structure that inflates upon impact to protect the occupants of a vehicle such as an automobile. The inflatable structure is linked to a gas generator and crash sensor. When an impact above a predetermined level of severity is detected, the gas generator is ignited, inflating the inflatable structure which contracts in length as it inflates. In a preferred embodiment, the inflatable structure is a braided tube. As the braided tube inflates, the diameter of the tube increases significantly and its length decreases significantly, due to the orientation of the fibers comprising the braided tube. The contraction in length pretensions the seat belt system by pulling any slack out of the seat belt systems. In a frontal impact, the inflated structure restricts the forward motion of an occupant and distributes crash loads over a larger occupant surface area to reduce both primary and secondary injuries. In a side impact, the inflated structure passes over the occupant's shoulder, restricts occupant motion, distributes crash loads and provides head and neck protection.

摘要: A constant-load deformable bracket for protecting the occupants of vehicles and/or objects from injury or damage resulting from vertical acceleration or deceleration. The constant-load deformable bracket starts to deform when the magnitude of the vertical force on the bracket reaches a predetermined value. In vehicle applications, the deformable bracket is installed between a seat and its platform. The deformable bracket may also be used in a storage container to protect goods.

摘要: An apparatus and method for measuring distances along single or multiple paths using fiber optics. The system uses a broadband optical source and broadband sensors. The lengths of one or more measurement paths are obtained with respect to the known length of a reference path. In one embodiment of the invention, two oscillators are used, producing signals, e.g., pulse trains, at slightly different frequencies (F1 and F2). The pulse train at F1 propagates through the fiber optic paths, and then is multiplied by the signal at F2, producing a time-expanded version of the original pulse at a frequency .vertline.F1-F2.vertline.. In a second embodiment, the phase shift of the light signals is measured at multiple frequencies, rather than at just a single frequency. When the light signals from the different measurement optical fibers are combined, the resultant net phase shift is a nonlinear function of both the lengths of the measurement optical fibers and the modulation frequency. Thus, if there are P measurement optical fibers, by obtaining the net phase shift at P different frequencies, a system of P simultaneous equations with P unknown is obtained. These equations are solved to determine the time delay in each of the P different optical fibers.
