A light source is disclosed for use optical communications systems. In one aspect, a gain region defined by a first and second mirror is provided having a corresponding resonant mode, and an external cavity defined by a third mirror and the second mirror is also provided having a plurality of resonant modes. The second mirror is configured such that one of the external cavity resonant modes is selected. The single channel laser has wavelength precision sufficient to eliminate the need for an external wavelocker, and has an external cavity capable of being directly modulated in a chirp-free manner.

Two lenses separated by an air gap provide spherical aberration compensation and focusing of a light beam to a focal point inside a data storage medium. The thickness of the air gap determines the amount of spherical aberration compensation provided. The distance between the lens pair and storage medium determines the depth of the focal point within the storage medium. The internal surfaces of the lenses which define the air gap are preferably planar. The external surfaces of the lenses are aspheric to provide accurate focusing and positive spherical aberration. The air gap between the lenses may also be formed by curved internal surfaces, in which case it is best for the focus lens to have a concave internal surface. The apparatus and method of the present invention reduces the number of optical components required for an optical data reading/writing device.

A near-field optical system having one or more solid state lasers and an aerodynamically shaped slider which comprise a single integrated, monolithic device fabricated from the same base semiconductor material. The monolithic optical head can be quickly and easily attached to the read arm of an optical read/write device without requiring attachment of separate laser elements, and without micropositioning or use of optical microscopy for positioning the lasers. The optical head comprising a single semiconductor substrate including a first region which defines a slider having an air bearing surface, and at least one second, laser region which defines a diode laser, with the diode laser having an emission face which is substantially co-planar with the air bearing surface. The semiconductor substrate preferably includes an active layer, a p-clad layer or reflective layer adjacent a first side of the active region, an n-clad layer or reflective layer adjacent a second side of the active layer, and an n-semiconductor layer adjacent the n-clad layer. A slider region of the semiconductor substrate includes an air bearing surface, adjacent the p-clad layer, which is aerodynamically structured and configured to define a slider. The integral lasers include a p-electrical contact adjacent to the p-clad layer and proximate to the laser emission face, and an n-electrical contact adjacent to the n-clad layer or an n-semiconductor layer. The laser mode is defined by oxidized or ion-diffusion regions associated with the p-clad layer or n-clad layer of the laser. A conductive via through the substrate allows electrical connection with the p-side contact to be achieved from the n-side of the substrate. The optical head is used in a near-field optical system with an optical medium having a phase change layer.

A positive unit magnification reflective head is used to back-reflect a primary light beam, for storing reflection microholograms at the coincident foci of the primary and reflected beams. Imaging the primary beam focus onto itself at positive unit magnification allows increasing system tolerance to tilts and transverse misalignments between the primary and reflective heads. Holograms are stored at multiple depths in a holographic storage medium. Tunable-focus primary and reflective heads are positioned on opposite sides of the storage medium. The reflective head images each storage location onto itself at positive unit magnification. Suitable reflective heads include: two lenses in an f-2f-f configuration and a planar mirror; a lens and a corner cube; a thin lens and a thick lens with a coated reflective back surface; and a thin lens and a back-coated gradient-index (GRIN) lens. To control the polarization of the reflected beam, the corner cube may include a plastic filler bonded on the back of the reflective surface. The filler index of refraction is chosen such that the primary beam is incident on the reflective surface of the corner cube at the critical angle.

A pair of compensation lenses which provide an adjustable amount of spherical aberration. Each compensation lens has an external surface and an internal surface. The internal surfaces face each other and define an air gap spacing between them. The external surfaces are preferably planar. The internal surfaces are purely aspheric and therefore have an absence of spherical power and an absence of spherical curvature. The amount of spherical aberration compensation is determined by adjusting an air gap spacing between the internal surfaces. The spherical aberration provided by the lenses can be negative, positive, or zero. For compensation of negative spherical aberration present when focusing light into a data storage medium, the compensation lenses should provide positive spherical aberration. The absence of spherical power characteristic of the compensation lenses allows them to be located far from an objective lens which requires spherical aberration compensation. Also, the absence of spherical power renders the focusing characteristics of an optical system independent from the air gap spacing thickness. Further, absence of spherical power renders the numerical aperture of the optical system unchanged by variations in air gap spacing.

The holographic storage and retrieval system according to the present invention comprises one convex reflector and one concave reflector having the same optical axis. The reflective surfaces of the two reflectors are opposite each other. The concave reflector is normally larger than the convex reflector. The holographic storage medium is positioned at the focal surface of the concave reflector. The spherical reflector system according to the present invention has nearly ideal performance off-axis: high bandwidth, low aberration imaging is permitted at a number of radial and axial locations. Thus, multiple SLM/CCD pairs can be placed off-axis to access the same storage medium and implement multiple interconnects.
