摘要: A color electroluminescent, EL, display device comprising an array of pixels (11) each comprising sub-pixels (1) of two or more colors (R, G, B). For at least one of the colors (R, G, B), the pixel (11) comprises a first sub-pixel (RL, GL, BL) comprising a first EL material and a second sub-pixel (Rc, Gc, Bc) comprising a second EL material. The first EL material is of higher lifetime than the second EL material; the second EL material has better color points and/or better color rendition properties than the first EL material. In some embodiments a pixel comprises two red sub-pixels (RL, Rc), two green subpixels (GL, Gc) and two blue sub-pixels (BL, Bc), one sub-pixel of each color (RL, GL, BL) comprising relatively high lifetime EL material and the other sub pixel of each color (Rc, Gc, Bc) comprising relatively good color points EL material. In other embodiments a pixel comprises two blue sub-pixels (BL, Bc) but only one red sub-pixel and one green sub-pixel.

摘要: The present invention provides for improved brightness and reduced power consumption in transflective displays operating in transmissive mode. The invention is based on the inclusion of a depolarizing means (206) between the transflector (201) and the rear stack polarizer (202). The depolarizer (206) is arranged to selectively depolarize light originating from the backlight (203) and reflected by the transflector (201), without substantially affecting the light that is transmitted through the transflector. Thereby part of the reflected light is transmitted back through the rear stack polarizer (202) and can be recycled in the backlight (203). The invention is applicable to any transflective display having a transflector (201) that changes polarization of light originating from the backlight (203) upon reflection back towards the backlight (202).

In the reflective part, the arrangement of optical elements consists of a polariser (11), a (biaxial or uniaxial) first retarder (12), a (biaxial of unaxial) second retarder (13), a negative uniaxial third retarder (14) and a liquid crystal cell (15) with well defined orientations of the respective optical axes to each other. In the transmissive part, the arrangement of retarders and polariser as arranged on the viewer side is repeated in reverse order on the backlight side of the liquid crystal device.

摘要: An active plate (2) for an active matrix display device (16), the active plate (2) comprising a substrate (4), a pixel area (6) and an adjacent drive circuit area (8). Both areas include polycrystalline silicon material formed by a process in which a metal is used to enhance the crystallization process (MIC poly-Si), but only the MIC poly-Si in the drive circuit area (8) is subjected to an irradiation process using an energy beam (10). TFTs are fabricated with MIC poly-Si which have leakage currents in the off state sufficiently low for them to be acceptable for use as switching elements in the pixel area of matrix display devices. As only the drive circuit area (8) need be irradiated to provide poly-Si having the desired mobility, the time taken by the irradiation process can be significantly reduced.

摘要: A display has circuitry (50) which generates all possible pixel drive signal levels on separate signal level lines. A buffer (54) is associated with each signal level line. The outputs of the buffers are selectably switchable onto the columns. The signal levels for each column are stored in a memory (72) and the buffers are controlled in dependence on the stored signal levels. The response of the buffers is heavily dependent on the output load, and there is a very large variation in the output load of the buffers (54), as a function of the number of columns to which the buffer output is to be provided. The buffers are controlled in dependence on stored signal levels to ensure stability of the buffers for any output load.

摘要: In an RGBW-type liquid crystal display device, luminance is improved by the addition of W sub-pixels while an image is displayed without any change in chromaticity of halftones. Digital corrected values of red, green and blue are obtained by adding a predetermined digital value for driving a W sub-pixel to each of RGB digital values which correspond respectively to pixels of an acquired image. A converting calculation is effected on the digital corrected values such that the ratio of these digital corrected values for red, green and blue is made equal to the ratio of the red, green and blue digital values corresponding to the pixels of said acquired image. The RGBW sub-pixels are driven with the converted values and the predetermined digital value of driving W sub-pixel to thereby display an image.
