    Abstract: A cable containing an optical fiber is used to transmit data between an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and a support vessel floating on the surface of the water. The ROV stores the cable on a spool and releases the cable into the water as the ROV dives away from the support vessel. The ROV detects the tension in the cable and the rate that the cable is release from the ROV is proportional to the detected tension in the cable. After the ROV has completed the dive and retrieved by the support vessel, the cable can be retrieved from the water and rewound onto the spool in the ROV.

    Abstract: A programmable device with an improved system for loading configuration data compresses configuration data by composing configuration data out of pairs of control words and data words. The configuration data is divided into configuration words. Each configuration word is further divided into a number of configuration blocks. In a control word/data word pair, the control word determines which configuration blocks in the configuration word will be loaded with the data word. Each configuration block designated by the control word will be simultaneously loaded with the data word. By taking advantage of the symmetry within the control word, typically only a small number of control word/data word pairs will be required to load a complete control word. If a given control word does not have sufficient symmetry, the programmable device can instead use an alternate system for loading the configuration word.

    Abstract: A method of encapsulating a cable strand formed of a plurality of bundled steel wires is carried out by forcing apart the wires of the strand with wooden wedges, and then filling the resulting gap solid with red lead paste. After this, the wedges are removed to permit the paste to coat and fill all voids between the strand wires. This operation is repeated at a plurality of circumferential positions on the strand. Then, the wedges can be driven in at an adjacent position up the strand. Next, the portion of the strand at which the red lead paste has been so applied is coated with the same paste. Finally, the cable is paint encapsulated by using a bath of red lead paint. This method is favorably carried out to protect the crotch of a suspension bridge main cable strand at a position near the strand shoe thereof.

    Abstract: A cable containing an optical fiber is used to transmit data between an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and a support vessel floating on the surface of the water.
